    1. [COBoulder] Lumping Ancestors Together
    2. Hi all, Just finished putting a report together and I was reminded of something that I did that could have been a big mistake. Hope you'll all allow me to share this anecdote. My gg-grandfather (David) and ggg-grandfather (Thomas) Carlton died within 6 months of each other. When David died only one of his six daughters had married and only 3 of an eventual 21 grandchildren had been born. When I started my research many years ago not one of those grandchildren that I was in touch with remembered a father and son. Thomas and David, and their accomplishments and attributes, had been blurred into one "Grandpa" Carlton. Several years ago I was visiting my brother and his family. We sat on the couch watching some W.W.II movie while the 3 nephews (ages 3, 10 & 11) played on the floor. My brother and I were talking about "Granddad" Knowles being a Navy pilot in W.W.II. Without noticing we shifted over to talking about "Granddad" Knowles being in the Army in W.W.I. We knew exactly which "Granddad" we were talking about - Dad who had become "Granddad" or our own "Granddad". But it dawned on me that the boys, half heartedly listening to us, had probably conjured an image of the only "Granddad" Knowles they knew, going to W.W.I in the Army and then W.W.II in the Navy. I was afraid the next time they saw him they'd say "How old are you !?!?" Regards, David
