Surnames: Whitelaw, Mabs, Jean, Jeanette, Van Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XY.2ADE/526 Message Board Post: On Dec. 6, 1938, Mabs, Jean, Jeanette, and Van wrote an epic called "Chestawatha" on a long scroll for Chester WHITELAW. I recently found a copy of this wonderful poem and would like to know who these people are. They would have been in the women's dormitory at the University of Colorado in 1938. I have no last names. Would love to hear from them or descendants.

    1. [COBoulder] State Census
    2. Hi all, I was given permission to pass on this information from a couple of other mailing lists. I was aware of some but had no idea there were this many. A special thank you to Iris in Iowa and Toby in Maine. It is a list of states and dates where there was a state census taken. A couple of warnings- 1. I haven't verified the data, so if one catches your eye check "The Source" or Cyndi's List or the area GenWeb site for accuracy. (For instance the Minnesota information looks like a few typos.) 2. I don't have special access to any of them and can't do lookups. I have used the Iowa, Nebraska & Colorado ones in the past ; on locale, at the State Historical Society or at a large urban library. I believe interloan library active has increased dramatically in the past 10 years so try your library. FHCs probably can get them. 3. What's the point? Notice the number done in the 1885-1895 period ; they make perfect 1890 substitutes (I think the main purpose harks back to the Constitutional clause - states took them when they were territories to show sufficient size to warrant admission to the Union and took them whenever they felt population growth warranted larger Congressional representation.) If they peak your interest and prompt you to search then this list has done it's job. The list : AL 1816, 1855, 1907 AZ 1864, 1866 AR 1829 CA 1852 CO 1885 DAKOTA 1884 FL 1814, 1885 HI 1878, 1890 IL 1855 1865 IN 1807 IA 1836, 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925 KS 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895 MD 1776 MA 1855, 1865 MI 1884, 1894 MN 1836, 1849, 1857, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1985, 1904 MS 1810, 1816, 1841, 1845, 1853 NE 1855, 1885 NV 1875 NH 1732, 1776 NJ 1855, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915 NY 1825, 1834, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915, 1925 NC 1784, 1787 ND 1915, 1925 OK 189 0RI 1774, 1782, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1915, 1925, 1936 SD 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1945 TX 1840 UT 1856 VT 1771 WI 1836, 1842, 1846, 1847, 1855, 1875, 1895, 1905 David

    1. [COBoulder] OT - Couple of Warnings
    2. Hello all, This is Off Topic but unfortunately I believe necessary. First the scam Genseekers is now sending emails as "GenSearching2003@yahoo.com" . They harvest your name, email address and topic from posts out up on Boards. Also on another list someone who is recognized as up to date on viruses, worms, etc says there is a new one out called "Sobig.C Worm" . Just a reminder - never open an attachment unless you know who it is from AND what it is. (Some viruses invade address books and use a friends real address to spread). Now, back to the fun stuff. 1. [COBoulder] Kansas Genealogical Society
    2. Hello all, I was trying to find an answer to a board post and goggled on this site - http://www.dodgecity.net/kgs/catalog/kgsusac.html . It is a listing of the publications held by the Kansas Genealogical Society. I'm focusing on certain areas but you should all check it out ; they have a great many things of Boulder County interest. Their Colorado holdings are excellent. Now my problem is I have all that many more obscure books to hunt down. Does anyone have any idea where these might be available ? 1.colorado - church - methodist United Methodist Church of Louisville Album Directory 1891-1980 2.colorado - research aid - history A Magazine & Guide to City of Louisville, CO 1980 Weidlein, James R, editor Allegro Communications Boulder, CO 3.colorado - school Views of the Twentieth Century, An Intergenerational Project ... Senior citizens from Louisville, CO & eighth grade students at Louisville Middle School; coordinated by Nancy Eaman; 1994 4.colorado - boulder county - history Louisville Centennial 1978 Louisville (CO) Times 1978 Souvenir edition - Aug 17, 1978; supplement to Louisville Times Many years ago I belonged to a number of societies. I need to start rejoining. But one that was the most useful in a strange way was the local one. I have no family or interests here but every year they'd have a (spring) conference and (fall) day long seminars. I loved the speakers but what I most appreciated was these would draw the vendors and booksellers like bees to honey. Are there any like that in Boulder ? Something where publishers or used book stores or eBay-averse-people come with their wares ? Regards, David

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XY.2ADE/524.1 Message Board Post: Tish, Kinda caught me on this one. I'm afraid my knowledge of Boulder history and geography is a little weak. I believe I've found the town at least ; Jimtown appears to be a nickname for Jamestown, which is about 14 miles northwest of Boulder. Appears to be "out there" on it's lonesome. I have some reference books and haven't found anything yet on Joe Vaughan ; but I'll keep looking. Regards, David

    1. [COBoulder] Weld County
    2. Hello, I've been surfing for some books and ran across a title that caught my attention. The book is "Under 10 Flags, History of Weld County Colorado", by Mary L. Geffs "HC. Privately printed, Greeley, CO (1938)". [doesn't sound like it's in very good condition and he wants $99.95 for it. I assume it is referring to the nations that at one time or another ruled that area ; similar to what they say in Texas about "6 Flags" (Spain, France, Mexico, Republic, Confederacy & U.S.). Anyone know what the 10 were ? David

    2. Once again it has been pointed out I can be obtuse. In my recent email, when I said "I only hope you scum have not put the AGLL out of business", I was addressing Ancestry.com, and NOT any of the lists / groups / people of the addressess. David

    1. [COBoulder] Ancestry.com
    2. These are harsh comments and I regret having to say them. But they need be said. I have held my comments. I have not taken a side. Until now. People have complained about having to pay for services. That is ridiculous. These things cost the services money and they need to be reimbursed. Are they under financial pressure ? I have no doubt. I signed on for the U.S. Census records on Ancestry.com. I had a 30 day "trial period" which I could have used and skipped out on. But I was very satisfied, understand their need to turn a profit & signed on for a year. Records that were available when I signed on, and were therefore part of the "contract", have just been withdrawn (eg Colorado state 1885 census). I now need to upgrade to access them. I only hope you scum have not put the AGLL out of business. David Knowles PS I have sent them demanding a full refund. I will keep you informed.

    1. [COBoulder] Census Index
    2. Hi all, Just a heads up. I joined Ancestry, com for the census images and have wondered about the few indexes available. On another list there was a thread about these and one person said (at least at Ancestry.com) the 1920 was indexed to head of household only and the 1930 indexed all members. I haven't verified that but it meshes perfectly with my experience using the two indexes. Regards, David

    1. [COBoulder] re: George Warren Greenfield
    2. Hi Twila, I just recently joined this mailing list and am now looking back through the archives. I noticed your post of 6 Jan 2001 and don't know if you have received an answer. There is indeed a Columbia Cemetery in Boulder ; it is also known as the Old Cemetery . He is there. The Boulder Genealogical Society has done a magnificent job of documenting and adding genealogical information to their record of the Columbia Cemetery. Go to their website - http://www.rootsweb.com/~bgs/ - and click on the Columbia Cemetery Burial Index. When you go to "G" and page down to Greenfield you will see on the far right "more info". It links to a City of Boulder site that has biographical information provided by Mrs. McRoberts and the Boulder Genealogical Society. It is a gold mine. It has his parents names, his wife's maiden name, dates, cause of death, residence and surviving descendants. He had 20 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. (One warning - the link can be finicky. I've tried it 3 times and it failed twice. But it's there.) Hope it helps, David Knowles
