Classification: Marriage Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XY.2ADE/439.1 Message Board Post: Hi Linda! Send your address if you would like the photocopies. - Karen Longmont Daily Call [Colorado], Monday, Feb. 27, 1928, p. 1 Pleas Milligan Weds Miss Frieda Myers Here Sunday Longmont Busniss Man Claims Charming Cincinnati Young Lady as Bride In a ceremony performed at 1:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. F. R. Hollenback, pastor of the First Methodist church of this city, Pleas Milligan, young Longmont business man claimed as his bride, Miss Frieda Meyers, attractive Cincinnati, Ohio, miss. The home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Patterson where the wedding was solemnized, was a charming setting for the impressive marriage service, the rooms being transformed in a decorative scheme of pink and white. The bride was smartly gowned in a soft shade of blue, her corsage of pink and white sweet peas accentuating the attractive effect. Her bridesmaid, Miss Darlene Stoddard of this city, was lovely in salmon pink crepe de chine and wore a corsage of sweetheart roses. The groom was attended by Henry Stoddard of Denver. Following the ceremony the bridal party and guests, who were Mrs. R. E. Waller of Denver, Eddie Gildner, and the hosts, Mr. And Mrs. J. E. Patterson, were served a very nicely appointed three-course luncheon. Later in the afternoon the entire party motored to Denver to enjoy the evening at the theatre. An abundance of old shoes, streamers, tin cans and other paraphernalia incident to a wedding, attached to the automobile tended to enhance the joviality of the occasion. Mr. Milligan has established himself in business in Longmont, having purchased the Reid Shoe Repairing business and with his brother operating the shop at the Patterson Leather Store at 317 Main street. He is the son of Mr. And Mrs. J. A. Milligan of Maryville, Tennessee and although he has only made this city his home for a few months has gained many friends and a good patronage. Mrs. Milligan is the daughter of Mrs. Sophia Meyers of Cincinnati, Ohio and arrived here only last week to be wed in the ceremony Sunday. The happy young couple have procured a residence in Longmont and will be at home to their friends at 547 Pratt street after March 1. --- Longmont Ledger [Colorado], Friday, March 2, 1928, p. 1 Young Business Man and Cincinnati Girl Marry William P. Milligan and Miss Frieda Mayers were married Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Patterson, 1220 Carlton avenue, Rev. F. R. Hollenback officiating. They were attended by Miss Darlene Stoddard and Henry Stoddard, of Denver. A delightful wedding dinner was served after the ceremony. The bride is the attractive daughter of Mrs. Sophie Mayers of Cincinnati. She came Saturday for the wedding, Mr. Milligan driving to Denver to meet her. The groom is the son of Mr. And Mrs. J. A. Milligan of Maryville, Tennessee, and came to Longmont December 12, after which time he bought his brother’s interest in Milligan Bros. Shoe Repair shop at 317 Main street. After a short wedding trip they have returned to Longmont, and are at home at 547 Pratt street.

As you were there, once, you probably know that there’s quite a good reconstructed ‘goldfield’, with all its appurtenances - my grandchildren adored it all, at ages 8-10. I cannot envisage myself ever visiting YOUR Balarat - I am not as agile as once! And, let’s humbly state it, a year ago I thought of Colorado as a desert. I did not know about the umpteen fourteeners, etc! See what a geographical motivator family history can be . . . Lois

I'll amend the footnote in my family history on Balarat with the original spelling of Victoria's Ballaraat (did I get it right?). We visited there about 1983 and it was grand. The American Balarat is an overgrown gulch in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies that nobody ever visits. Rollie

Goodness knows how the original people said it! Australia is sprinkled with placenames which misrepresent the local language - even the nearby townships (hamlets) Delegate and Collector are derived, we learn, from Aboriginal names. No doubt it’s much the same in the USA.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XY.2ADE/393.1.2.1.2 Message Board Post: Lois, I just remembered another parallel between Boulder County, Colorado and Australia. My great grandfather, Anderson Lafayette Mason, and his wife, Nancy Eleanor Foster, moved with their young son, my grandfather Charles Lewis Mason, to a new mining camp in Boulder County named Balarat. Despite the loss of one of the "l's" Balarat was named for the gold strikes in Ballarat, Victoria in the 1850s. My great grandfather discovered the principal mine in the Balarat district, the Smuggler, in 1875. Of course, the family never made any real money mining at Balarat or elsewhere in Boulder County, despite more than eighty years of trying. Best wishes, Rollie Schafer

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XY.2ADE/393.1.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Lois, Good to hear from bleak, foggy Canberra in the wintertime. Although we're not directly related, I have James Arthur Burch in my genealogy. He married Margaret Griffiths and they had six children. James Arthur Burch's father and mother, William Wallace Burch and Roxy Jane Carter, are buried in the north Hygiene, Colorado cemetery next to the Church of the Bretheren, an old, 1879 Dunkard church (row 7, plot 41). Frank Henry Burch and his wife, Nellie Maria Cochran, plus other offspring of William Wallace and Roxy Jane Burch are buried at Hygiene. I met Frank Henry about 1954 in Boulder, although at the time I had no idea that we were related. I was twelve and he was about eighty. I am aware of the "most interesting" Burch-Nichols genealogy and history of which you speak. Please send me your e-mail address and I'll send you a rather long narrative that describes a story that goes back to 1630 and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. (Didn't quite make it back to the Mayflower!) The narrative is far too long for this communication and would lose some of its necessary formatting by inserting it into this document. The narrative, which I wrote, summarizes the pertinent part of the story that one of my cousins and I have obtained from several Internet and other sources. Pearl, Cari, and any one else who wants this information too, you may send me your e-mail address and I'll copy you. I'll be in Boulder, Colorado in the next two weeks and will probably stop by the Hygiene cemetery where my great grandfather is buried. I'm still trying to figure out where, but -- according to family tradition -- "It's in the Burch plot." If anyone would like a copy of the Hygiene cemetery records, please furnish me with your postal address and I'll send a copy. This record was on the Internet but the address I have no longer works (http://spot.colorado.edu/~wasson/northtxt.html.). Best wishes and thanks for the reply.
