The fence has been installed and is proving effective in keeping the prairie dogs out. Currently the gate is chained shut because of some damage to the hinges. Even so, I'm not sure they are allowing access right now. They are preparing grant applications so that next year they can restore the gravestones. They hope to contract with David Via who they call "one of the most highly recommended gravestone restorers in the country." Very good work and thank you Superior Historical Commission and Superior Historical Society. David Knowles

I have copies of 3 books of newspaper extracts that Mary McRoberts did. One is : "Boulder County, Colorado / Marriages, Anniversaries, Divorces, Births and Birthdays / 1859-1900 / Newspaper Abstracts / Mary McRoberts / Boulder, Co/July 1991" Another is : "Boulder County, Colorado / Deaths and the Insane / 1859-1900 / Newspaper Abstracts / Mary McRoberts / Boulder, Co / July 1991" And : "Genealogical Abstracts from the Boulder Daily Camera / 1891-1900 / Boulder, Colorado / Mary McRoberts The very FIRST entry in the Marriages book is : 1. "King, Dr. Dean W. m. 24 Dec 1860 Vevy Anna Smith in the Rocky Mountains by Hon. R. Wilkinson. (RMNW 28 Dec 1860:3)" [RMNW=Rocky Mountain News Weekly ; WOW - this is so early they didn't have town names, it's just "Rocky Mountains" ! I'm not sure Boulder County had been named yet !] 2. Marriages - "King, Dean W. , originally of Boulder but now of Denver, m 4 Feb 1891 Josie Barker of Boulder, at home of Mrs. Hannah Barker in Boulder. Will live Salt Lake City. (BN 5 Feb 1891:4; HW 4 Feb 1891:5)" [BN=Boulder News ; HW=Boulder County Herald Weekly] 3. Marriages - "King, George H. , formerly of Boulder, m 12 Feb 1891 Louise Hutchinson in Denver. (BN 19 Feb 1891:4 ; HW 18 Feb 1891:5)" 4. Divorces - "King, Dean W. filed suit for divorce in Arapahoe County Court from Josephine (Barker) King and she filed cross complaint. Both formerly of Boulder. Josie filed suit in Denver May 1896 on account of desertion. He accused her of infidelity and of hitting him with a Bible and a pound of butter. She denies it all. At the time of their marriage, she possessed money and property worth $20,000.00 She left the management of it to her husband who lost it all. She asks for custody of the child. Divorce granted Josephine 30 June 1897 on grounds of desertion and non-support [sic]. (BN 1 July 1897:4 ; HW 13 May 1896:1 ; HW 30 June 1897:1)" [Up until about 1903 Denver was part of Arapahoe County, after which it was Denver County] 5.There are 4 mentions of a "Coroner King" ; don't know if it is him or not - 1886, 1887, 1888 & 1890. 6.There are 2 mentions of a "Dr. King" - 1884 & 1887. 7.Death - "Smith, E.B. is dying in Golden, Co. His son-in-law Dr. D.W. King received a dispatch yesterday saying he was dying. Over age 90. Bro of the late N.K. Smith of Boulder. (HW 18 Sept 1895:5) He d last week Golden, Co. Age 88. (BN 26 Sept 1895:4)" Also the Boulder County GenWeb site ( http://hollyhockfarms.com/coboulder/main.htm ) has an online index to the Green Mountain Cemetery and the Lafayette & Louisville Genealogical Society site ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~collgs/ ) has an index of Boulder County burials. LLGS has : "King, Dean W. 1836-1909 GMT King, Veryanse 1839-1914 GMT" Boulder GenWeb has : "King, Dean W. October 1, 1907 King, Veryann November 22, 1914" At Ancestry.com for the 1920 Federal census (just the indexes, didn't look at the scanned images) : There is a Dean King born Colorado in 1870 living in San Francisco. And a George H. King born Colorado in 1864 living in Denver. And a Dana W. King born in Colorado in 1873 living in Tacoma, Washington. [It is my experience that these are very common migration patterns for Boulder County families] Also the Boulder County Clerks Office has an online index to their records ( http://icris.co.boulder.co.us/documentSearch.jsp ) ; but when I keyed in "King" for 1860 to 1920 it brought up 960 records. I didn't continue <G> It's a start, David

So now we have the New Cemetery, the Old Cemetery and the Really Old Cemetery. The Really Old one has gone by various names over the years and is today called the old Superior Cemetery. It is in a serious state of disrepair and the Superior Historical Commission is spearheading an effort to correct this (THANK YOU Superior Historical Commission members ! ). On Saturday 1 March they held an open house to discuss the issue. Can anyone supply us a report or summary of how the meeting went ? What is the status of the barrier fence ? And controlling the groundhogs ? And is any effort going to be made to excavate for any overturned stones ? And is there any plan for someone to walk the area and take photos ? Regards, David Knowles
Dear All: Some volunteers from the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have established a wonderful new program for users of Rootsweb. These volunteers will do lookups in their database and records if you think one of your ancestors served in some capacity during the American Revolution. These volunteers have more databases available to them than those commonly used by the search engines. The process is fairly simple : Go to the DAR message board: There are two ways to do that: www.rootsweb.com message boards topics organizations and societies DAR Or lift this URL:-) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar Address your message as follows: subject : DAR Lookup > surname> location > dates In the body of the message copy the information regarding the person and be sure to fill out the surnames box at the bottom since the search engine will be keying on that item. Leave the email response box checked and you will be notified when a DAR volunteer responds. Allow a week or so for them to get to your request. We really appreciate their efforts. This info can be a key for a) joining the organizations (DAR & SAR) b) sending a request for copies of the files that were submitted and the information they have available. Many thanks to: Glenda Thompson, DAR VIS Volunteer, Vice Chrm. Patriot Lookup for organizing this effort and all the many volunteers that are donating their time and effort to us instead of pursuing their own ancestors. Best Regards John A. Hansen DAR board admin. BTW: Please forward this message to other lists and boards that you are involved in. Pass along a word of thanks to each volunteer that does this work and especially the one that responds to your post. It would probably be highly appreciated.
Hi, That's a tough one. I noticed the burial entry on the Boulder Genealogical Society site for John. There it's listed as John W. and you cite John L. . First I am always surprised at how mobile Boulder families were ; and the lack of Wilson burials in Lyons make me think they lived there shortly and moved on. Second I have 3 books of newspaper abstracts by Mary McRoberts that cover Boulder County 1860-1900. Didn't see any thing that looked like this family. Again makes me thing they were married & had children before and died after being in Boulder County. Third I've found a William and brother John in the 1900 census in Altona (about 7 miles south of Lyons). Here it's "John M." .And also found them in 1880 in Kansas. But when I look at the 1920 or 1930 indexes there are too many possibilities to be able to find any one of them. Is there anything else you can tell us about the family that might help differentiate them ? Any idea as to birthplace ? Approximate ages ? Any unusual or uncommon given names ? (I think I have the same William & John in 1900 and 1880 and some names are : Ethel, Loretta, Lora, Chora & Claude) Any idea where any of them were in 1920 or 1930 ? David

Seeking info on family, believe John d 1907, Lyons Co. Children in family were William, John L. Ira, Stella, Nora, Lula, Jett. Grateful for any clues. Viola
Hello all, I wasn't aware of this although it's probably been brewing for quite a while. Today there is a press release on CNN - "50 million historical documents posted on Web" The National Archives has opened a website they call AAD - Access to Archival Databases ( http://www.archives.gov/aad/ ). Some excerps from the article - "It's totally self-service from your desktop." "The initial release of AAD contains material from more than 30 archival series of electronic records, which include over 350 data files totaling well over 50 million unique records." "The series selected for AAD identify specific persons, geographic areas, organizations, or dates. Some of these series serve as indexes to accessioned archival records in non-electronic formats." " The database draws from the records of 20 federal agencies. Most of the information was created by the agencies to suit their own program needs, without any thought to its historical significance. Because of that, some records have typographical errors like misspelled names or an inaccurate dates. National Archives officials did not correct any of the information to preserve the records' integrity. " David
Hi, I tried to send the following to the List Administrator but it bounced. Could the list administrator please contact me? Harry Hi, My name is Harry Ross and I'm a past president of the Longmont Genealogical Society. For years we've been working on a book of tombstone inscriptions of the Longmont Mountain View cemetery and finally have a 500 page book ready for the printer. It should be "hot off the press" by Memorial Day. Meanwhile, we are selling pre-publication copies at a discount of $10.00. Would it be permissible to make an announcement to the list about the book? I could either give full details or simply tell about the book and give contact information. Thanks for your consideration. Harry Ross Longmont Genealogical Society.
HI Harry, I'm not the admin, but it looks like your message made it to the list. I am the admin of the Boulder County GenWeb site and would be happy to put your information on the website. I can't put prices, but would be happy to put the descriptions and contact information on my cemetery page. Send me what you want people to know and I'll do the rest.
