Among the earliest of the German Reformed congregations organized in Pennsylvania was the one in Lancaster. Between 1709 and 1735 the immigration of Germans, Swiss and French into the county of Lancaster was very large. They were mainly exiles and refugees, fleeing from the intolerant religious persecutions that followed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and adherents of the Reformed or Huguenotic faith. In 1736 these people felt themselves strong enough to organize a congregation and begin the erection of a church. Jannine Coble Gregory Austin, Texas Remember "where ever you go there you are"
This came from another list. A great aide in learning about migration routes from PA. into Ohio. Jean Here is the address of a website that explains the Indian trails in Pennsylvania. Migration Trails In Early Pennsylvania Here is an address for similar information for Ohio. OHIO COUNTY INFO: Pioneer Migration Routes through Ohio (Website information by Maggie Stewart Zimmerman, who coordinates many Ohio counties.) History of Ohio routes is on the website. Five major routes followed Indian trails and Revolutionary War routes. The following was posted on the Ohio County Info webpage. >From the book: Genealogical Research in Ohio (Page 19) by Kip Sperry email: Kip_Sperry@byu.edu WWW: http://reled.byu.edu/chist/sperry 1. by Lake Erie's shores and on Lake Erie 2.across western Pennsylvania 3.through southeastern Ohio to Marietta and up the Muskingum River 4.through southcentral Ohio and up the Scioto River 5. via Ohio River into Cincinnati and up the Great and Little Miami rivers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------- 1. People migrated from PA to OH if they could purchase land inexpensively from the U.S. government. Men who served long terms in the military were often given military warrants or grants of land for their service. The veteran could sell this land and use the money to purchase land elsewhere. ( If a veteran did not want to move, he could sell or trade his land.0 States east of the Mississippi River that are not in the original 13 colonies have land patents online. Search land patents at www.glorecords.blm.gov/ 2. Some people just "settled" on land that belonged to the government. They would purchase the land later. Some land was even given away if a family would build a cabin on the land and make a permanent home. A territory had to have a certain population before it could become a state. Land was opened for settlement when treaties were made with the Native Americans. Certain areas were considered "safe" for settlement. 3. In Ohio, the canal system connected the Ohio River with the Great Lakes. Farmers could get better prices for their crops when there was a good harvest. In the eastern part of Ohio, the canals followed (roughly) the Scioto River to the Ohio River. In the western part of Ohio, the canals followed the Miami River, connecting (roughly) Lake Erie to the Ohio River and then the Mississippi River. 3. In the mid-1800s, railroads were built. Most railroads were built with private funds from stockholders. There was fierce competition between small towns. If the main line railroad bypassed the town, the town would not grow. Smaller railroads connected small towns and villages to cities like Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati. Dayton and Springfield. Ohio Migrations Map and Information

Hi Everyone- Please excuse this slightly off topic subject, but I wanted to share this with you. Last Tuesday my husband Jim and I were planning a brief get away to some warm sun, when another snow storm hit Connecticut and closed the airport at Hartford canceling our flight. Attempts to reschedule another flight on subsequent days failed and we resigned ourselves to being at home. We are having some renovations done to the exterior of our home which included replacing the attic windows. Last night in a heavy rain and wind storm, a new attic window which was not locked, blew open (it is the type that swings in for easy cleaning and swing in it did)! At 4:30 a.m., we hear the sound of plop, plop, plop, (notice that I did not say drip). Jumping out of bed to find water making its way through the ceiling to the second floor directly over my computer work area. Grabbing bath towels we attempted to mop up as much water as we could before any further damage could be done. This was a major leak! Hardest hit were my research books and fabric covered computer chair, but spared in the nick of time was the scanner, printer and computer and.....my paper files containing Coble/Kobel research which were spread out on the work space. As Jim continued to mop up and I used a hair dryer to dry my water logged books, we both realized how lucky we were to be at home when this happened. Had we been away, we would not have returned until tomorrow and the storm continued for another six hours so I can't imagine what kind of mess we could have had on our hands. Lucky us! I guess there is a reason for everything. Jean

I offer this information with caution. Please use it only as a guide to further prove/disprove the line of Johann Georg Kobel. This comes from a letter written in 1988 to a Coble genealogy cousin of mine. I do not know the writer nor her sources. It was written in an attempt to see if our Coble/Kobel line somehow "fit" into the line of Johan Georg. It turns out that it doesn't, we do not descend from this line. So, here are portions of the letter that pertain to Johann Georg as written. "The line begins with a Hans Bernhard Kobel (Goble) born around 1630 in the Holy Roman Empire (area now in southern portion of West Germany). He m. an "Anna Maria" (surname not yet known). He was a lawyer. Among others they had a son named Hans Georg Gobel, baptized 3 Dec 1656 at Hoffenheim in the Bishopric of Speyer (H.R.E.) He m. (1) Eva Sonss at Hoffenheim, m. (2) 20 Jul 1700 at Hoffenheim, Maria Elizabetha Gilbert. He died -- May 1713 at Hoffenheim. He was a court counselor. Among others, Hans Georg and Eva (wife #1) had 2 sons who came to Pennsylvania: (by wife #1 he had 10 children but only 2 we know of who came to America). A. Jacob KOBEL b. 1682 Hoffenheim, Bishopric of Speyer B. Johann Georg KOBEL (Gobel) bap. 4 Jun 1693 Hoffenheim, Bishopric of Speyer. By his 2nd wife, Maria Elizabetha Gilbert, he had 4 additional children. We know for certain at least one came over at a later date. He is: C. Johann Nicholas KOBEL b. 27 Jun 1701 Hoffenheim, Bish. Speyer. Jacob Kobel (A.) married a girl named "Anna Maria" in 1708 in Hoffenheim, and in 1710 Jacob and Anna Maria emigrated. They were in a repatriation camp for some time at Nutting. Their first baby, b. ca 1709, d. there at Nutting. In 1711 they were at Livingston Manor, East Camp. Later (by 1714) they moved on to Schoharie, New York. They were there for some time, until about 1726 or so, when they migrated down to Tulpehocken Twsp. in Berks Co. PA. I am told that there are quite a number of Cobles who descend from this Jacob. He did NOT migrate south, in fact, I don't believe any of his immediate descendant lines went to No. Carolina. (Listed are their 10 children, I will not list them as they are already well documented. Jean) Johann Georg Kobel/Gobel (B.) is the younger brother of Jacob (A.). This Johann Georg came over in 1733. We have him well-documented on both sides of the "pond". He and his family came to Phil. in 1733 and settled in Lancaster area of Lancaster Co. then later to Hanover which after 1749 was in York Co. Around 1750 and on to 1760 or so, all of Johann Georg's married sons left PA. and relocated in Guilford and Alamance Co.'s NC. In PA. and in Hoffenheim this branch always spelled it GOBEL. It wasn't until virtually 1800 that they got all the NC descendant branches to use COBLE. I know of NO male descendant line of Johann Georg GOBEL (B.) that stayed in PA. Johann Nicholas Kobel (C.) came over in 1752, stayed only briefly in York Co. PA. then south to Guilford County with half-brothers." END As we discussed on this list, Johann Georg (B.) emigrated 28 Aug 1733 on the Ship Hope. All of his 12 children were born in Hoffenheim, with the exception of his last born child Johannes who was born 28 Aug 1734 in York Co. PA. Johannes died 1791 in Shrewsbury Twsp. York Co. PA. Johann Georg (B.)1693-1765 married Maria Barbara GEISLER, b ca 1695 in Hoffenheim. It is Johann Georg's son Antonius/Anthony Kobel, born 24 Aug 1717 Hoffenheim, that my notes show married Maria Barbara Summers, b ca 1720 in Guilford, N.C. This is not my line and I have no proof of the marriage to Summers. Does anyone know if a marriage record has been found for Antonius/Anthony in North Carolina? That would give you the needed proof and put an end to the question of......who did Anthony marry! Jean
Jennifer, David Speicher mentioned here. He married the sister of my Christian Kobel, Jr. Also, I am a descendant of Christian Kobel, Sr. b. 1765. I know that his wife Catherine (Roth) Kobel was buried at the Lehman Cemetary. Do you know whether or not Christian is there as well? What other Kobel's are buried there?
