I am looking for information on Joseph Coates from Orangeburg. He had the farm next to the grandfather of Pollard Coates. Pollard and Emilia Coates were born in the 1790's. Their mother was Helena Hickman Coates. This is known because all three are mentioned in the will of John Hickman, dated 1799. There is no mention of Helana's husband, although, now that I look at it again, there is no mention of the spouses of the other children, except one. Originally, we thought that Pollards father was Elijah, because his wife's name was Elanor Hickman, but we now know that Helena and Elanor are two different people. So, reading all that I have read, I must assume that Joseph is Pollards grandfather, as well as Austin's (son of Elijah) and that Sion, Elijah and Pollard's father are brothers. This being said, any information you can pass on about Joseph and his children would be helpful.
