Elijah Coats we know from A deed in Barnwell, S.C.and a diary dated 1890 from Elijah's g.grandson that he Married Eleanor Hickman b. (1800 S.C. Census indecates 25-26years) Elijah Coats shows up in Wilkinson County before 1810. Also, through deeds in Wilkinson County,Ms and g.grandsons diary that Austin Coates of Wilkinson Co.,Ms. is the son of Elijah and Eleanor Hickman Coates. Austin Coates is said to have 3 sisters; Elizabeth "Betsy Coates,Rebecka Coates and Mary Coates.All children of Elijah Coates and Eleanor Hickman. (The name seems to vary from Coats to Coates after arriving in Mississippi and LA) (Hickman is spelled Hicksman in the diary but, Hickman in the Will and Deeds) Joseph Coats lived next door to John Hickman and Elizabeth Bright . In John Hickman's Will he names Daughter Helena Hickman Coates and grandchildren Pollard Coates, and Emilina Coates. (I believe that Helena Hickman was married to Joseph Coates) and that Elenor Hickman married to Elijah Coates is probably a sister to John Hickman. (infor.Thru Land plats showing the land that was given to Elenor Hickman) in 1802 when the land is sold .(Will information from Justin Sanders) Also, I believe this is further concluded thru the naming of Austin M. Coates (b. 1788) Children . Martha Washington Coates,David Jackson Coates,Charles Austin M. Coates, William Elijah Coates and Joseph Pollard Coates. In the naming of these children there is a pattern which I believe develops. Charles (son of ) Austin M. Coates and Joseph (Father of) Pollard Coates. The William Elijah could imply William (brother of ) Elijah Coates. (note: or Wm. (father of ) Elijah.) I started trying to figure out these patterns with my g.grandfather who had a name that would choke a horse: Simeon Charles Austin Lanehart Coates b.Oct.1856 Simeon (Maternial grandfather) Charles (father) and (son of ) Austin (paternal Grandfather ) Lanehart (uncle married Austin Coates sister Mary ) (named in Honor of) The Lanehart's had followed the Coates children to Caldwell Parish,LA after the death of Austin Coates. Austin Marion Coates (widow) Margaret Coon had remarried to Asa Anderson. All came to Wilkinson County,Ms. from South Carolina then, to Caldwell Parish, LA.
