I need help to find birthplace and parents of James COATS, b. Aug. 27, 1818 in S.C. (Poss. Newberry?) Wife- Slata (Salena, Sleata, Saleda?) Thompson; (reportedly 1/4 Indian, born in Ala.) He 1st appears at age 22 in Lauderdale Co. MS in 1840 census, with 1 son William Henry COATS, my great grandfather then 6 mo old. Then to Carroll Co. MS by 1850, where James had two brothers nearby,--- William and Moses. Then to Wood Co. TX by 1860; then to Hunt Co., TX. by 1870 until death in 1890. Buried in Shiloh Cemetery, near Greenville. His middle initial may be "B" Strike any chords, Cuzzins? Would appreciate any clues or solutions. Thanks! Bill Coats
Bill, I don't know if there is a connection but I would check out this COATS family who was in Lauderdale Co., MS about the same time as your COATS. James Robert COATES b. March 9, 1786 KY and d. Nov. 16, 1861 Lauderdale Co., MS. He m. Elizabeth WEBSTER Dec. 24, 1807 Robertson Co., TN. They had: 1) John Webster b. Sept. 22, 1808 TN 2) Cynthia M. b. Feb. 2, 1810 TN 3) William B. b. May 7, 1812 Robertson Co., TN 4) Lucinda H. b. June 15, 1813 TN 5) Madison (male) b. March 30, 1815 Robertson, TN 6) Johnston Boyd b. April 18, 1817 AL 7) Caroline b. 1818 Greene Co., AL 8) James Elgin b. April 7, 1819 Greene Co., AL and d. May 13, 1899. This James had 2 wives according to LDS site. 1) Quintella ANDERSON (or AMBERSON) and 2) Harriett Ann WILLIAMS 9) Lyman b. 1821 Greene Co., AL 10) Mary b. 1823 Greene Co., AL 11) Benjamin Franklin b.
