Married 1839 to Slata THOMPSON (part Indian). All censuses agree James born in S.C. To Carroll Co., MS by 1850: to Wood Co., TX. by 1860: to Hunt Co. TX., by 1870, and died there 1890; buried Shiloh Cemetery. Eldest son --Wm. Henry COATS, b. 1840; then John A., S.J., Mary Ann, Frances D., Louisa A., Mattie, Martha, James Sylvester, Oliver Price, and Robert Madison COATS, all of whom made it to East Texas. James COATS had at least two brothers; William (died in Carroll Co. in 1852) and Moses Butler COATS, who remained in Wood Co., TX., until his death around 1890.
