The following comes from p. 602 of Spartanburg County / District South Carolina: Deed Abstracts Books A-T 1785-1827 (1752-1827) by Albert Bruce Pruitt. The heading at the top of the page says "Book Q." The entry reads: "p. 314-316 Jan. 29, 1814 Hardy Fluker (Edgefield Dist) to Marmeduke Coate (Newberry Dist); for $90 sold 200 ac; border: Venable's Crossroads, John Burnet, Cart Road Br, George Rowlan, School House Br, and Leonard Cardin; part of 890 ac survey Jan. 21, 1793 for Leonard Cardin. Witness Henry Coate and Joel Bell. Signed Hardy Fluker. Wit. oath Jun. 17, 1815 (Newberry Dist) Joel Bell to Y. J. Harrington JQ. Rec. Jul. 2, 1819." (Spelling and punctuation are as they appear in Pruitt's book.) This is of interest to me because it is the first time I ever have seen the names Coats and Burnett (in any spelling) on the same sheet of paper. I found this while looking for the parents of Juliana Coats and of her husband, Jeremiah W. Burnett. They ended up in Perry Co., AL, about 1850. With them was Margaret Coats, whose relationship to Juliana is unknown. Mary Carolyn Sparks mcsparks@yahoo.com mcsparks@speedgate.net
On p. 49 of Miscellaneous Alabama Newspaper Abstracts, Vol. 2, the name "Samuel Coat" appears under "Lists of letters remaining at the post office in Selma July 1, 1822." (Selma is in Dallas County, AL, not too far from the Perry Co. line) Does anyone recognize this name? Mary Carolyn Sparks mcsparks@yahoo.com
Would the Coats List Owner please E-mail me? Thank You, Tom hagrid@wt.net

Hi...well, my connection to the Coats line is Rev William Coats married Nancy Baker out of Smith County TN, who moved to Callaway County MO in 1817...their son William married first Patsy Tracy and second Cena Callaway, William and Cena's son Huff Demetrius Coats married Louisa Jane Craig, their son James E. Coats married Muzetta Nigh, their son Robert Paul Coats, my grandfather, married Leah Dotts and their son Claud Russell Coats, my father, married Anna Belle Frisinger...whew... Anyway, I've documented all back to Rev William and Nancy to Smith County TN to 1802 in the Brush Creek Primitive Baptist Church Records...according to the Callaway County History he came from SC to Smith County TN .... but I'll tell you, that group in SC is sooooo confusing...there are a bundle of Johns, Wilsons, Williams etc...some have thought that Rev William Coats father was William Coats on Kings Creek in Newberry County SC...but I'm not sure of that because there is another William in Bedford County TN where the rest of William of Kings Creeks kids went...well Barton I guess went to Robertson County TN.... Anyway, there seems to be lots of theories and few documents in most cases...so I'm just gathering documents at this point and I've found another Charles, James and William in Jefferson County GA and another group of Coats in Richmond County GA...they may and the Richmond group came probably from SC to GA...not sure about the Jefferson group...I'm checking into these records now... Soooo...that's sorta it in a nutshell....there is an Analysis section in the Coats Archive that has documented some of this info and some of the various theories...although I haven't tackled the Williams in SC yet... Price Cemetary Information: The Price Family Cemetary (for this line of Prices) is located on Highway 1010, Cleveland School Road. The best directions I have are as follows: From Johnson Tech in Smithfield go west on Highway 210 until the road splits. Bear to the left and go approximately 2 miles to cross a creek bridge which will put you on Highway 1010. Proceed toward Cleveland Middle School (it will be on the right) but do not go beyond the school. The overgrown cemetary sits right beside it close to the road but you have to look for it. A new subdivision called Broadmore is being built around the site. This cemetary is very old with marked and unmarked graves of Price Family members. For some reason, Claude Price was not buried with the rest of the family in the cemetary listed above. He is instead buried in a cemetary off of Highway 301, across from the American Legion. This information was given to me by Van L. Coats (son of Euphemia Price). He also told me that the Coats family was from Onslo and Garner Co., NC. Well, that's it. I believe I have included everything. Looking forward to any response. Susan
