Hey List; Just a random walk through a couple of subjects. 1. Former Senator Dan Coats. Just wondered if anyone has Dan Coats's line. He is apparently the insiders choice for Secy of Defense. I sent him a letter 10 years ago asking if he had done any research, and he said no. I thought maybe Linda or John Henry may have his line, since he is from Indiana. In his last race for the Senate, he was the first national candidate in the nation to be announced the winner, with about 62% of the vote. Then he announced his retirement a few years ago. 2. Robertson County Tennessee. Recently, I hired a researcher in Rob Co Tenn, asking him to find any record of James Robert Coats and his wife, Josephine Elizabeth Webster. Their first child, my gggrandfather, John Webster Coats was supposed to have been born there on 22 Sept 1808. He found nothing on James or his wife, but did find an indenture from William (Couts-Cook) (spelled both ways), to Eli Jones dated 27 Jan 1797. Also, a Barton Coats buying from a Williams one hundred acres in 1811. Later, another deed by William Couts to John Baker. Also, later, several more transactions by Barton Coats in the early 1800's. Just wanted to pass this on. Also, wanted to mention I'm now doubting a lot of the early information I obtained from Annie Sue Sumrall of Meridian Ms., which were based on a transcribed copy of a supposed bible record of Madison Coats, a son of James Robert. Problem, no one has ever seen a copy of the original record. Also, conveniently, James's first child, John Webster, was born almost exactly nine months after the supposed marriage date. Problem: Wedding day was on 24 Dec, Christmas eve, 1807. Did many people get married on Christmas Eve back in those days. Sounds a little fishy to me. Any feedback will be appreciated.
