3. But we don't have any records showing that Capt Henry Coate had a wife named Mary...so it's just conjecture at this point that the Henry's are the same person...plus...why would the records refer to Little John, very clearly, but then in other not refer to him as little john... When were the Annals of Newberry Written...? Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda J. Dudick Sent: Sunday, December 31, 2000 4:58 AM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] Annals of Newberry I just found my copy of the Annals of Newberry, and that's the source we've all taken it from that Little John is the father of Marmaduke (called Duke) the surveyor (p. 148) "Marmaduke Coate, the youngest son of John Coate, (little) lived in Newberry from 1812 to 1828. He was a surveryor of much experience." (Annals of Newberry) Which equity court record lists the brother to Marmaduke as Capt. Henry Coate? If it really lists them both that way, then we do have the family mapped out correctly to the best evidence available. Little John is the father of Marmaduke the surveyor and Capt. Henry. That and the land records of the Henry living next to Little John, that Capt. Henry had a wife named Mary before the other 2 wives..... something I previously conjectured on, on my homepage..... Also, I noticed when reading it this time, it keeps referring to the "Annals" said and occasionally it makes a correction on the Annals... Is there more than one version of this? I'm answering my own question as I read. I think the original was by Judge Oneal in 1856, then a 2nd one in 1892 reviewing and adding to the material in the original by Oneal and Chapman.... ==== COATES Mailing List ====

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
