I do think that John Coate was the son of Henry Coate and the deeds are recorded back to back...but they don't refer to him as Little John Coate....I think we need to be careful with these titles...there is a deed that does refer to Little John Coate as an adjoining land owner to a Henry Coate...but that is the only reference to a *Little* John Coate...why would they refer to a *Little* John Coate and then later just John Coate...I think they could be two different people...then you go to Edgefield I think it was and some deeds refer to him as Little John, that's from memory...that just seems strange to me...so I think we need to be careful...lumping all these folks together without more info... The same applies to *Big* John Coate, there are deeds that refer to *Big* John Coate, there are also deeds that don't...and the will that has been attributed to *Big* doesn't refer to him as *Big* John Coate... I think we need to be careful in lumping everyone together...it just seems strange that sometimes they use Big and Little and yet other times they don't...that doesn't seem to fit for me... Happy New Year, btw... "Lastly, when father Henry dies, he does not will or deed out his 200 acres that he purchased in 1765. However, this same parcel of land is sold by Little John in 1792 proving the descent from my point of view. More specifically, Henry Coate purchases 200 acres from John Brooks on July 29, 1765. It was on Scotts Creek with no adjacent families. John Brooks had purchased it on Aug 26,1757. It consisted of some buildings and pasture lands. Then, (Little) John Coate and his wife Susannah sell to Peter Buffington 200 acres on Nov. 14, 1792. The land was on Scotts Creek, and was originally purchased by John Brooks on Sep. 19, 1758 (when the transaction was completed). The filing of the deeds clinches it. Henry's purchase of 1765 was not filed until 1792 (years after Henry's death) and is filed directly before this John sells the same property to Peter Buffington according to one set of SC deed records. " Will be back to correct data I keyed in wrong about Mary Coate, 1st wife of Marmaduke "Duke" when there is time. I'm still losing letters being composed (hit the wrong key) and can never find them again. The ole blood pressure goes up and I have to take a break. My documentation will be when I can find my data after changing from FTM to Family Origins and going to the library again. Happy hunting to all and a prosperous 2001.
