William Coats is the first born son of James McKenzie Coats1 and Annie C. Spears. Bertha is Williams eldest daughter . William McKenzie Coats 2nd daughter was Jennie Annie Ray cited in a later e-mail . Cassonia Ray was William Coats granddaughter . Her father was also of Cherokee descent . They all lived in the Welch Oklahoma area . Also registered was the sister of William Mc Kenzie Coats a Jenny Mills and her 3 children . Their father was also Cherokee by blood. > This is my husbands Cherokee line . Henry L. Coats , Samuel Coats , James McKenzie Coats and William McKenzie Coats 2 were all sons of James McKenzie Coats 1 .This line connects back to General Joseph Martin , Joseph Spears , Captain John Spears , Catherine Hilderbrand - all well documented Cherokee families. Lucinda Martin Dennis was the mother of Annie C. Spears , 3 wife of James McKenzie Coats 1 . The name of James McKenzie Coats was repeated in at least 3 succeeding generations. The name of John and William was given to sons of brothers which also confused some issues. All the Coats that appear on the Dawes Rolls are related to Charlotte or to my husband . There is one lone Coats who does not fit these lines . He is John Coats son of Jennie Elliot , Cherokee , and Simpson Coats , white . Simpson was born in Tn about 1820 died in Tahlequah Oklahoma , before 1896 . James McKenzie Coats 1 was born in Tn. about 1813 , married 3 times . All of his wives were of Cherokee descent . He and Annie B. Spears Coats are buried in the Coats cemetery on private land in Strang Oklahoma. Also buried there are Samuel Coats , a Wattenburger infant ( Samuels first wife was Cora Wattenburger) and Lucinda Martin Spears Dennis .These names appear on most Cherokee Dawes Rolls or census roll of Whites and or Cherokee living in the Cherokee Nation , West . They are written up in most of the notable genealogical works on Old Cherokee families. Hicks has an excellent site on family tree maker that connects these lines to most of the old and noted Cherokee Matoy and Amatoy Matoy lines James Coats * Charlotte wrote: > Census card #4173 > roll #28090 William Coats, 42 years old, M 1/4 cherokee > 28092 Bertha E.
