Help Coatses! Looking for the parents and birthplace in S.C. of above gg-grandfather. Spouse was Slata (Sleata, Sileta) J. THOMPSON, b. abt 1824. Family first appears in Lauderdale Co. MS in the 1840 census with baby son. Next in Carroll Co. MS in 1850 with 4 more children. Then to Wood Co., TX in 1860, and on to Hunt Co. TX in 1870 where they remained until their deaths in 1890 and '91, resp. James had a younger brother, Moses B. (for Butler?) COATS, b. S.C. abt 1825, and an older brother (or possibly an uncle), William b. S.C. abt 1805. These men present as neighbors in the Carroll 1850 census. William died in MS about1853, and Moses moved on to Texas with James about 1853-5. Moses died in Wood Co around 1890.
