Hi fellow Coates researchers, I am searching for information about Elijah Coates (Believed to have been born in VA moved possibly to NC then, Barnwell, SC. He was married to Elenor Hickman I know he was living in Barnswell (Note deed) on the South Edis River. What District is this? Richland or Orange. He is seen on Deed - Barnswell SC - Deed from Elijah Coates and wife Elenor to William Barr, Book B, Page 324 dated aug 3,1801 , for 167 acres on South Edis to river , recorded 2 Jan 1806. Elijah appears in the 1800 Census ,of Orange Co., SC, with one male under 10 and one 26-45 and 2 females under 10, one 10-16 and one 25-26. A Sion Coates also, appears on this Census.
