Yes, I am inclined to agree with this as well...not to mention some of those early land areas in TN really didn't have any governmental form...and in some cases a deed doesn't show up til the land is sold...or with the county lines changing the deed could be in another county...but I think there were just a lot of land records in TN that just weren't recorded in those early days... I don't recall the origins of LCT, Charlotte, but will look around for the info. As to the paucity of info on Coats families in LCT, all I can say is that that is consistent with their almost nonexistent record in Rowan Co. NC. I really tend to believe that my Coats ancestors were the sort who just did not particularly trust government in any form, so consequently, they had as little to do with it as possible. Again, as John knows, there is at least a good chance that some of the Coats families in Rowan Co. NC had Regulator connections(a la the Merrell family). All this just MHO. * Charlotte wrote: Well, I likewise was surprised to see that there were not many Coats in this county in the early land records or even the index...but I think the index I have starts in the 1900s again...I'll take another look at that...was Lincoln County made from another county...? I'm not up on that counties line changes? Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Larry Coats Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 9:51 AM To: * Charlotte Subject: Re: [COATES-L] Lincoln Co. TN Coats info(perhaps new?) Yes, they were the only Coats found in LCT for 1836, which, I have to admit, I found somewhat surprising as my Thomas(b. 1803 NC)had a number of Coats aunts and uncles, most of whom got there sometime around 1815 or so. Surely some of them had to be on a tax list somewhere.....then again, this family was generally situated in the SW part of LCT. Good chance some of them leaked off southward into N. Alabama.(????just speculation). * Charlotte wrote: Isn't this Thomas the one related to John of WA Wiley...? were these the only Coats you found in this tax list....and born in SC...Gary is this your Thomas, the son of Thomas? born 1803...wow...not sure who that is? Guess 1803 would be too late for Thomas of SC kids...most interesting info though...thanks...every little bit helps....I've just ordered the next two rolls of film for Lincoln County TN Deeds as well....but I don't think I'm down into the 1800s yet with those....Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Larry Coats Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 6:55 AM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] Lincoln Co. TN Coats info(perhaps new?) This from the 1836 tax list for Lincoln Co. TN: District 22- Thomas COATE(which is, I'm sure, identical with Thomas Coats/Coots of LCT, b. SC c. 1803 and d. LCT 1874) District 2-John Coates Joseph J. Coats(15 acres in Dist. 2) These last two I am not sure about at all. In fact, I've not encountered a Joseph J. Coats in any of the LCT families, so I am left wondering who the heck he was. Any assessments/opinions? Regards to all, -- Larry D. Hamilton Coats P.O.
