Dear List, I am in the UK researching COATES in Yorkshire, that why I am a member, plus some ancestors moved to New York State in the 1840's. I have a question for US researchers, when researching your family lines are you interested in all members of the family i.e. siblings, aunts, cousins etc or is your only goal to extend your knowledge of your direct male line? I ask because I often find the language used to describe your research so different to how I do mine. This is not a criticism just an interested person. No offence intended. In the UK most people would describe themselves as Family Historians and not Genealogists as these people just research pedigrees. I find that this causes confusion when US researchers ask for help in UK. So much for a shared language.
