A few days ago I sent some information to Charlotte Coats-Siercks regarding Josiah Langdale, father of Mary Langdale Coates (wife of Samuel b. 1711) and John Langdale, husband of Sarah Hudson (daughter of William Hudson, Jr. of Philadelphia). I asked for her comments, and she advised me to consult your web site and perhaps write to you. I did look at your site and was very impressed. It is really excellent. I can see why you've been honored for your genealogical work and for your web site. The honors are very well deserved. I took the liberty of improving my records on Josiah Langdale's descendants by borrowing some of your data and adding it to the file I keep with Family Tree Maker V. 7.5. I was pleased to see that my records generally agreed with yours. For example, I noted your skepticism (which I share) about the connection between Henry Coates who married Susan Elliott in Rowan Co., NC, and Samuel and Mary Langdale Coates of Philadelphia. Like you, I'm inclined to accept the list of their children in the Hinshaw encyclopedia as probably accurate, although I've noticed that some researchers have added others to the list. There was one thing, in particular, that surprised me, and I would love to know more about this. I did not realize that Mary Langdale Coates lived until 1804. I had seen a notation in Hinshaw's EAQG stating that Mary Langdale, age 57, died on 10-23-1770. Subtracting 57 from 1770 gives a birthdate for this woman of 1713, which was the year that Josiah's daughter Mary Langdale was born. So I supposed that the woman who died, even though she was referred to as Mary Langdale, not Mary Coates, was probably the widow of Samuel Coates. Since that apparently was not the case, do you know the identity of this Mary Langdale who died at age 57 in 1770? I was also very interested in the information about Alice Coates. Quoting your comment: "Mary was related to an Alice Langdale, because Mary's sons Samuel and Josiah were her executors after Alice, who was the executrix for Mary's estate, died during this process. She also had a brother named John, brother-in-law named in husband Samuel Coats will." Now, I know who the brother-in-law John Langdale was. He was the son of Josiah of Yorkshire, husband of Sarah Hudson, and father of eleven children listed in the Bible of his father-in-law. But, who was this Alice Langdale? The person who comes to my mind is Alice Coates Langdale, daughter of Mary Langdale Coates, and widow of her first cousin, John Langdale, Jr. If so, she was the young woman who was disowned by the Philadelphia MM for marrying John Langdale, Jr., contrary to discipline in 1765. She fits perfectly, it seems, but I don't have information about when she is supposed to have died, other than your comment. I would appreciate very much any comments you feel free to share on these matters. Also, for your information, I'm forwarding separately the e-mail I sent to Charlotte. Sincerely, John E.
