SC Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 16:29:13 -0500 (CDT) Hi Charlotte, At the library in Newberry, the nice lady brought out a BIG map and spread it out. Quaker Burying Grounds was on that map! I saw it written in, so the exact location has been pinpointed. There are 2 churches named Bush River Baptist Church about a half mile apart. Give me your snailmail address and I'll send you some pictures. We (Clarence Hodnett and his wife Delene, Valeria Wigington, Bruce Wilhoit, and I) went inside the Caucasian BRBC and the pastor and his wife visted with us a few minutes. His name is Rev. Glen D. Buie. His address is 8936 Bush River Road, Newberry SC 29108 and his phone # is 803-276-2380. He gave us a book (the kind you bind at Kinko's) which was put together for their 225th anniversary celebration. It is entitled Bush River Baptist Church 1771-1996. Twist my arm and I'll make you a copy. It's about 63 pp. We were told the original records are in a safe deposit box at the bank and the person with the key was "out of pocket" (my words). At the library, I made a photocopy of the Bush River Baptist Church cemetery listings and I noticed the name: Sarah An Coates 2/12/1827 - 7/16/1827. I also copied pp. 22-23 of NEWBERRY CO. SC CEMETERIES Vol. 1 (1982). I guess you have that already. It's for QUAKER CEMETERY. Is that the same place as Quaker Burying Grounds? I'm sorry if that sounds like a stupid question (I thought maybe there were 2). The location of Quaker Cemetery is given in this book as 3 1/2 miles south of Newberry SC. I mentioned earlier the big map with "Quaker Burying Grounds" written in; I saw that, but I don't remember if the location was "3 1/2 miles south of Newberry." The surnames on the Quaker Cemetery list are Gilliam, Lake, Gilbert, Blair, Latham, Robers, Spillars, Earle, Hunt, Herbert, Buk....(broken), Chandler, Pugh, Reagan, Kelly, Parham, Jenkins, Kirk, Mendenhall, Thomas, O'Connor, Frean, Belton. Do you know anything about the HUNTs and the KELLYs? I'm going to a wedding in Chattanooga, TN in mid-July and I'm thinking about going back to Newberry around July 17-18. Can you make it then? I have to be in Atlanta on July 19. Valeria and Bruce were great guides (they live one and two hours away). Do you know anything about Palmetto Branch of Bush River? One of John Abernathy's deed records mentioned it. I wanted to go there and we found a Palmetto Creek and I have a snapshot made there (but not at the spot where it meets Bush River). Our able navigators were looking at the OLD map and trying to find a road on the new map that went there. On the old map, I recently noticed the spelling is not "Palmetto" but Pammetto. The nice lady at the library sold me a map for $1.00 of NEWBERRY DISTRICT South Carolina surveyed by M. Coate 1820, improved for Mills' Atlas 1825. Chandler's Mill IS ON THE MAP a little west of Newberry Village on Bush River. COATE is on the map, too, a little north of Saluda River and a little east of Little River. Do you have this map? I could probably reduce it at Kindo's to 11 x 17 or legal. I think I posted something on a Newberry board asking about two references I found to an "island ford" on the Saluda River. It's on the map, too. Do you know anything about Mount Bethel Academy? It's on the map, too. Sorry if I'm boring you with info. you already have. Tell me about the surveyor Mr. Coate. Did he work for the government? Was he born in Newberry Co.? Did he go to an ivy league school? Were others of your relatives "professionals" at that time?
