    1. [COATES-L] Newberry Deeds

    3. I made some interesting discoveries today in the Newberry County SC deeds..these deeds are different than the ones in the LDS miscellaneous court record group...so if you're researching SC keep that in mind... In 1779, Book B, p. 255, Henry Rugheley to John Coats of Scotch Creek - 100 acres on Bush Creek, adjoining Robert Ball but it is blurred...also 150 acres - originally surveyed for Samuel Chapman, also on Bush River adjoining Benjamin Alkins, Hugh Creighton and Giles Chapman...also 107 acres - originally granted to Giles Chapman - this deed was recorded in 1793 and witnessed by James Coate & John Williamson....(char's note: this deed conveyed three different pieces of land) I also found the 1765 deed of Henry Coate purchased from John Brooks, this was John Brooks original grant of 1758...these are lease and release formed deeds...looks like two deeds but they worked together...not sure exactly how but it's only one transaction...anyway, not only was that deed here but it contains 3 pages...I've not extracted all of them yet but will..the very next deed from this was from a John Coats/Coate, selling the same piece of land - John Brooks' 1758 grant and next was John Coate, wife Susannah selling the same piece of land to Peter Buffington...the same 1758 grant of John Brooks... This 1765 deed of Henry is the deed that was also witnessed by William Coate and James Coate and it is on Scotch Creek as well... 3. Charlotte, I am intrigued with the deed that mentions Susannah as the wife of John Coate(s). I do not know if you remember but I am the one whose Coats line is supposed to go as such ( according to Mary Helen Pemberton ): Silas Pearson married Susannah Coats, born 1833, ( my gr gr grandparents ) Susannah Coats, born 1833 was a daughter of John Coate born abt 1796 in SC and Martha "Patsy" Rudy born abt 1802 in VA. John and Patsy were members of the Greenville Creek Christian Church in Miami County OH. John Coate born abt 1796 in SC was supposidly a son of a John Coate born aft. 1769 in Bush River SC and a Susan, possibly "Brock" for a last name according to Mary Helen. The "theory" continued as such: That John Coate born, aft 1769 in Bush River was a son of "Gentleman" John Coate. From her work and possible the work of others I do not know, I have this family grouping as possibilities for John and Susan: Descendants of John Coate 1 John Coate b: Aft. 1769 in Bush River, Newberry Co., SC .. +Susan Brock b: Aft. 1770 ......... 2 Rachel Coate b: Aft. 1790 ......... 2 John Coate b: 1796 in SC d: Aft. 1850 ............. +Martha Rudy b: 1802 in VA ......... 2 Susan Coate b: 1799 ......... 2 Sarah Coate b: December 21, 1801 ......... 2 Elias Coate b: 1804 ......... 2 George Coate b: October 09, 1806 d: March 13, 1883 in LaMars, IA. ............. +Mary Lucinda Jackson b: Unknown ......... *2nd Wife of George Coate: ............. +Gabrilla Brandon b: Unknown ......... *3rd Wife of George Coate: ............. +Rachel Williams b: Unknown ......... *4th Wife of George Coate: ............. +Martha Martindale b: Unknown ......... 2 Rhoda Coate b: January 16, 1811 ......... 2 Lucinda Coate b: June 03, 1818 ......... 2 Rebecca Coate b: Unknown ......... 2 Elizabeth Edine Coate b: Unknown ......... 2 Mary Ann Coate b: Unknown ......... 2 Samuel Coate b: Unknown Charlotte, I am very interested in what you find in regards to this John Coate and Susannah in the deed(s) you mention.
