    3. Mary...I'm ccing this to the Coates list...I think there are probably others there that could answer this better... One comment though...Marmaduke who was the surveyor....and then we have another Marmaduke who went to OH...hmmm, not sure which is which...seems to me the one that went to OH was the brother of Little John? Char ----Original Message Follows---- From: meyerma@webtv.net (Mary Meyer) To: coats@hotmail.com CC: meyermary@hotmail.com Subject: Marmaduke Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 21:51:15 -0500 (CDT) Hi Charlotte, I was looking through my files and found some letters written to me in 1982 by a lady (known only to me by correspondence) named Mary Helen Pemberton who lived in West Milton, Ohio. >From a letter dated January 11, 1982: "DEED; NEWBERRY CO. SO. CAR. 1802:Jan:26: GEORGE ABERNATHY to Marmaduke Coate (both of newberry) for $500.00 for 160A, part of 200A originally granted to Phlip Fagan?, situate in Fork of Broad and Saluda Ribers [sic.], patent dated 8:19:1768 and conveyed by Fagan toMonathan Taylor and by him to his son Jonathan Taylor and by him to GEORGE ABERNATHY and by said Abernathy to Marmaduke Coate on Jan. 26, 1802. Wits: Samuel Miles, Wm. miles. "NOTE: There were two Marmaduke Coates n Newberry in this period. One 9the younger) was the son of Little John Coate (many descendants went to Alabama). The other was the son f Henry & Estehr (Wilson) Coate wh came south from New Jersey and he md Mary Coppock dau of Moses & Martha (Lester) Coppock. Moses was killed by Indians near White Lick Meeting House c 1758/9 and Martha left a will (1797). "I have found that the name Fagan was sometimes TEAGUE. "Samuel & Wm. Miles were sons of William & Catherine Miles. Samuel md Mary Taylor d/o Jonathan & Mary (?) Taylor and Wm. md her sister Jane. The Miles lived at Rocky Springs (my Pemberton familyw as in that section). Marmaduke Coate, son of Little John, was a surveyor and I have his map of Newberry Co." This next quote is from a different letter which I think was mailed to me in September 1981: "Believe John & Rhoda had a dau. Amy who married John Cote sn of John Coate & Rachel Wright of Newberry Co. S. Car. Did Amy die before John came to Miami Co. Ohio where he requested that his brother William be appointed guardian of his ch. Henry, John, Rhoda & Sally in the Jan. term of Common Pleas Court 1810. Bk J1, 101. May hae had a dau Estehr who d. Amy was liing Sept. 12, 1792 when she was a witness at the marriage of George Brock & Chariy Cook (Bush River original Quaker records)." The following is from a letter to me dated Nov. 4, 1981: "Thank you for what data yous ent me even if it wasn't what I needed. what about George - do you have anything on him? Since he deeded land to Marmaduke Coate, perhaps he is the correct one." I was a little late answering her; I was busy having babies at that time. On August 9, 1984 I wrote: "George Abernathy...was born around 1786, the son of John and Rhoda (Davis) Abernathy. He married Abigail Lindsay, daughter of James (and Ruth) Lindsay, the patriot. George died n 1830 in SC....George was the brother of my ancestor Samuel Abernathy who was born in 1798 and married Jane Boyd." Do (or did) you know Mary Helen Pemberton? On Jan. 11, 1982 she wrote: "We are having a snowstorm. Was 20 deg. below zero yesterday morning. I have to stay in and keep warm as my temperature goes to 94 sometimes and I just freeze and must stay in bed to keep warm. I get sleepy and just might not wake up if temperature went any lower." Anything new or controversial in these quotes? She also wrote: "My Isaiah Pemberton who md Elizabeth Hall was the elder son of Geo. & Margaret (?) Pemberton - and brother to George who md Judith Brooks. There was a Geroge Pemberton there who had a wife Sara and I cannot place him" (Jan. 11, 1982).
