Dear List; The lineage I submitted came from the family history done by DeLeonardis, paid for by Sue Coats-Sumrall. Most of the earliest line cames from the Madison Coats Bible, which I've never seen a copy of, but it must be out there somewhere. The line back to James Robert was entirely correct as far as I can prove by wills, deeds, and censuses. It shows the first five kids were born in Robertson County, Ky-Tenn, where there definitely was a boundary line dispute, just as there was between Ohio and Michigan. When those counties were split up, Robertson definitely didn't get any records. They may be in Ky or Davidson, Tn. There were probably two James Coatses in the war of 1812 from TN. Maybe John R. served also, and that is where he got the Major. Later, both families were in Green, AL. There are land transactions for John R. Several of Jameses kids were born there before he moved to Lauderdale, MS. James left a farm there with one of his kids. It is very easy to be negative and critical, but if we can't accept anything based on family histories, what reason is there to go on. We have to accept a small amount based on empirical evidence backed up by DNA. John W. Coats
Who is John R.? This is my understanding of this group: John Coats m Ann Dunnigan - who at times is called Maj. although coming from the South that may or may not be a valid Military term... James Robert Coats m Elizabeth Webster William Coats m Francis - Newberry/Kershaw County SC We know from DNA that these groups are related but we don't know how from the documents and I'm not sure we'll ever know, since so many documents were destroyed in the South....we also know that at least William Coats w Francis has documented connections with Notley Coats, whose father is Charles Coats wife Sophia in Frederick/Montgomery MD - Notley as well as at least one documented brother a James Coats and other documents showing a connection with others in this SC grouping... We have the documentation for John Coats m Ann Dunnigan their son was James Green Coats, he was the executor in both their probates I believe...that is a provable fact...as well as their other kids are listed in the probates... I don't keep track of what is below other than in my line...but I don't think unless old research is referenced or documented we can rely on it... That's all I'm saying John....too many of these old histories have been just accepted, I'd rather not do that with my family...however, anyone else is free to do as they wish... There is indeed another James Coats in Bedford County TN who got a land grant in TN from North Carolina, I suspect that is where the North Carolina group of Coats and my line got mixed up... Look folks, provide me with documentation and I'm more than willing to accept a line or good circumstancial evidence I will look at...but with circumstancial evidence you can go a lot of different directions on that... And I'd be just delighted to have someone disprove anything I say with documentation...that is what research is all about....:) Family stories are great to a certain extent but unless you can provide some type of references, they are just family stories...recall at least two branches of my family have a story of a James Coats early ancestor...that is still possible but if I'm too hard in that direction I might miss clues that would take me to documentation that could really connect this family with their past and I'd just rather not do that.... So that's where I'm coming from...much conflict in family lines, not a lot of answers yet....:) Char On Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 8:31 AM, John Coats <jwcoats@htc.net> wrote: > Dear List; The lineage I submitted came from the family history done by > DeLeonardis, paid for by Sue Coats-Sumrall. John, Thanks for all the info on James and John! Does anybody else know of other points in their lives where they lived in similar places beside Green, AL? Do we know where Major John Coats lived when he was young? This is really helpful.
