The name btw is spelled Coats and Coates in these records... I found a deed specifically naming William Coats as the son of Charles Coats Found also was a receipt of William Coats acting on letters of attorney from his sisters, Sarah and Mary Coates and brother Thomas Coates...they are refered to as William's brother and sisters in this record... Not sure this would be the same William Coats as mentioned in the Tax records with Charles Coats I believe it was 1792 or 1797.... Also found two deeds: William Coats selling, Charles Coats' land, his father's land...states Charles is his father in this deed...it appears that a Shadrack Vining was the administrator of Charles' estate... There is also a deed showing that William Coats is purchasing land from his father's estate....all these were recorded in 1805... Recall the Court Records for Jefferson County GA names William Coats as the guardian for some of the children of Charles Coats...I don't recall the specific names in that record, it is in the archive, but I do recall one of them was Thomas but it seems there was also another, which started with a B but the full name was not clear... Also found a Nicholas Baker deed...might be more on the Coats/Baker connection...
