Well most interesting....have you run into a Lewis Coats/Coates out of PA, that's another dead end (see Gup, I'm thinking of you....:)), he shows up in KY then TN or visa versa...but he's another one that whence he came, we just don't know...no DNA for his line either...all these daughtered out Coats/Coate/Coates or just the daughters are looking....:) Anyway...I find it very difficult to remain in CA and not be able to just sit and look through all those old records on the East coast, most distressing...I just know we'd find the answers or at least some documented guesses... Which brings to mind...the Coats in SC and Coarts in MD...boy, that is something...but it sure all fits really well....I also found Notley's will and estate papers in the Chester County SC Will books...and his name is spelled Cotes in those...recall William of Camden was spelled Cotes and Coats in that Newberry County SC deed.... The other thing as with PA, MD, NJ and VA for that matter....those areas are really close...so any of those families could have fanned out in the next generation...but MD to SC that's quite a jump I must admit....and the name Charles just comes out of the blue....have you seen any Charles' in PA or VA ? Maryland, boy, that sure seems to me that it might be a migration down from the New England states...but it appears to me, that Charles is there in 1780s, but no will for him among those wills I found, that seems unusual as well, at least an estate record of some type...usually there is something inventory, sale if not a will....but where did he come from before Maryland?? And could Charles and William in SC also be his sons ....it appears however, the name Notley ended with him in Chester County SC though.... What a puzzle that drives me nuts!! If you are a Male Coats/Coate/Coates or other variation on this list...please, please, please, please consider joining the DNA project, if you have not already....that is such a great help I think...also, if you find it's too expensive for you, let me know, we'll find the funding...and remember when you order the kits via our project you get a reduced rate.... I know what you mean about dealing with some organizations with a simple request for information - I usually have better luck finding some kind person in the area generous enough to just to go the "building" and make copies for me (I repay their costs). I think what irks me the most are the organizations that do not even have the manners to acknowledge your letter. My main area of research has been VA (regarding another surname) and I have had success dealing with the the county courthouses for copies and the Library of VA which does offer interlibrary loans of their microfilms. I have had some luck with PA & MD sources but found the better known organizations rather expensive. --------------------- But to finish off what I have found regarding Elizabeth Coates - daughter of Isaac Coates (died 1786)..... Second Presbyterian Church Marriages 1763-1812, Philadelphia, PA 1792, June 20, Coates, Elizabeth and John Vanclever 1808, May 4, Lewis, Lewis and Elizabeth Van Cleve according to Van Cleve researchers John Wright Van Cleve (h/o Elizabeth Coates) died in 1802 but I since they also list a daughter named Elizabeth I am not sure if it was the widow or the daughter (who was likely too young) who married Lewis Lewis in 1808 or perhaps neither. One last connection that may eventually offer some insight - John W. VanCleve was listed as executor in the will of Peter Brown written in 1799. But in 1804 Browne added a codicil changing executors (according to VanCleve researchers John W. is now deceased). Peter Browne's will was proved in 1810 - his connection to the family of John Coates & Mary Hale is that he married Sarah the daughter of Mary Coates [sister of Isaac Coates] & Isaac Dutton. Elizabeth Coates/Van Cleve and Sarah Dutton/Browne would have been cousins IF Elizabeth is the daughter of Isaac s/o John & Mary Coates.
