Well, I've just not gotten into PA yet....and they for some reason don't want to share their microfilm....:) PA, NJ and now MD have become very difficult to research, NJ doesn't make any microfilm available and PA is like VA requires permission from everyone down the chain of command....:) MD now will scan the microfilm, better than most...but once again, trying to do research is difficult since it often requires going through tons of microfilm to see what is there....:( When will they get smart and put it on the web or don't they want to? I suspect they like most are making bundles of money from the way it is.... Moses Coates group out of Chester PA is suppose to be related to Marm's group, cousins...sure wish we had a DNA for your group....:( We do have a really good Coats/Coate/Coates research group though....most folks that have info post it to the list...we just don't have enough records to know for sure....and I do like those original records....:) Char ----Original Message Follows---- From: Susan McIntyre <[email protected]> To: Charlotte Coats <[email protected]> CC: [email protected] Subject: Re: [COATES-L] Isaac Coates of Philadelphia, PA Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2004 17:02:53 -0400 I have been trying to hold off looking into the many William Coates until last as they seem to be a confusing bunch. Warwick and Warrick are two separate persons - research states that Warwick was named for his grandfather Hale and connects to John Coates who immigrated from England to Philadelphia before 1710 - I am unsure of Warrick's origin but I think he is connected to the Moses Coates group immigrating from Ireland about 1717. I often visit your wonderful website containing images of the original documents. I only wish it offered copies of the Isaac Coates will of 1786 and Abraham Coates will of 1804 so a comparison could be made of inheritances which might clear up some of my confusion about Isaac. Does anyone on the list possibly have copies of the full wills of Isaac Coates proved 1786 & Abraham Coates proved 1804 that they would be willing to share? Char, You've done a fantastic job covering PA documents and I for one am very grateful for all your work! I know what you mean about dealing with some organizations with a simple request for information - I usually have better luck finding some kind person in the area generous enough to just to go the "building" and make copies for me (I repay their costs). I think what irks me the most are the organizations that do not even have the manners to acknowledge your letter. My main area of research has been VA (regarding another surname) and I have had success dealing with the the county courthouses for copies and the Library of VA which does offer interlibrary loans of their microfilms. I have had some luck with PA & MD sources but found the better known organizations rather expensive. --------------------- But to finish off what I have found regarding Elizabeth Coates - daughter of Isaac Coates (died 1786)..... Second Presbyterian Church Marriages 1763-1812, Philadelphia, PA 1792, June 20, Coates, Elizabeth and John Vanclever 1808, May 4, Lewis, Lewis and Elizabeth Van Cleve according to Van Cleve researchers John Wright Van Cleve (h/o Elizabeth Coates) died in 1802 but I since they also list a daughter named Elizabeth I am not sure if it was the widow or the daughter (who was likely too young) who married Lewis Lewis in 1808 or perhaps neither. One last connection that may eventually offer some insight - John W. VanCleve was listed as executor in the will of Peter Brown written in 1799. But in 1804 Browne added a codicil changing executors (according to VanCleve researchers John W. is now deceased). Peter Browne's will was proved in 1810 - his connection to the family of John Coates & Mary Hale is that he married Sarah the daughter of Mary Coates [sister of Isaac Coates] & Isaac Dutton. Elizabeth Coates/Van Cleve and Sarah Dutton/Browne would have been cousins IF Elizabeth is the daughter of Isaac s/o John & Mary Coates.
