I am writing from Aberdeen in Scotland but was originally from Dundee. I can only go back as far as my grandfather, who hailed from Paisley on the west coast of Scotland. He was reputedly related to the Coats family which are one of the world's leading thread manufacturers, now trading under the name of Coats Viyella. The family must be well travelled as back in 1992 when I visited Edmonton in Canada, I came across a Coats thread turntable at Fort Edmonton, dating back to the mid 1860's. I paid quite a substantial sum of money quite a few years ago to have my family tree researched, but unfortunately it was a con trick, all that was provided was a list of Coats family members worldwide. Luckily we managed to retrieve most of the money, so all was not lost. Also, I have often wondered about Coats Island in Hudson Bay and Coats Land in Antarctica, whether they had something to do with the family. All I could find out was that Coats Land was discovered by Scottish explorer and was named after his benefactors (Coats?). I would dearly love to have more information on the family name and will relish browsing through your excellent web site. If you require any information from me don't hesitate to ask.
