My Nathaniel Coats/Clarence Alexander Coates line has some really shady characters in it. It seemed that a lot of this family had scrapes with the law and some spent time in prison for murder in the early 1900's. I have court records for Clarence Alexander Coates who is the grandson of Nathaniel. Numerous descendants, now living, of Nathaniel Coats do not like to discuss their heritage but it's all history and most of the family are great people. I know Nathaniel Coats had relatives in East Texas (Rusk and Nacogdoches Counties) even though he is on the Brazos County, Texas census for 1870. His wife left him and took their four year old son from Brazos County to Nacogdoches to stay with relatives about 1899 - 1900. She supposedly went to Galveston in a wagon for supplies and perished in the hurricane of 1900. I hope I'm not writing too much but maybe someone out there knows something about this line. Thank you.
