And once again...the DNA project is probably the best way to help sort all this out...:) I will post what I get from Frances...some of it is old research...I might also remind folks that Thomas wife Sarah Ann also had a possible son John, when Jesse sold Thomas' land, they except a portion *that John lived on*...Frances' father I think felt that James Coats in GA, was connected to us as well...his belief that or the person that wrote the info about it, was that James Coats' family may, or some of them may have gone to Jefferson County GA...I still believe that Charles in Jefferson County GA is Charles and Ann Coats from Kelly's Creek in Newberry County SC...we have no record that Charles died in SC although some of this research seems to assume that...the Ann who died there with the daughters, I know I'm being non specific here, but this is from memory...anyway, there is no indication in the records that she is Charles' wife...and Charles and Ann did sell their land about 1792, which is about the same time that the rest of this family left SC...so I don't think the Ann in SC is Charles' wife...and we have an estate deed, a transcribed one from GA, showing which of James' kids took his land and I don't believe it named a Charles or William in it...the John in this deed is assumed to be Georgia John of SC and I did in fact find at least one reference in SC to a Georgia John Coats, not sure it was a will record or deed and I think he was just a witness to the document, so we do know that there was a connection to Georgia at least with one John...Marmaduke also had a connection to a Mariah Coats in GA...also the James Coats in GA didn't have a son William if I recall correctly... Both Frances' father and my father, although no contact over the years, have a family tradition that a James Coats was in our direct line of ancestors my dad believed he was a Quaker from Philly and I think Charles Coats in MD puts us closer to the PA Coats area...but records from that area are so scarce still, that it's still up in the air, no land records from PA on line yet....the closest we've come to any connection earlier out of SC is Charles Coats wife Sophia's son William but wife Mary in MD.....Charles and Sophia probably also had some daughters we don't know about...so that could account for no land records in MD after Charles dies, although there are no estate records for he or his wife... Also earlier research seems to but that William wife Mary in the Polk Swamp area as the same William who died after he'd lost all his family, buried I believe in Charleston SC, there just isn't any documentation to connect those two Williams' as being the same person, it has just been assumed over the years that they were.... So get those Coats cousins into the DNA project....:)!!
