John Webster Coats,b.1808,Rbtson Cty, TN.,d.1872, in Lauderdale,Ms.m.1835-1836m,Ellen Brantley,b.1820, NC.d1868, Lauderdale. 2.Cynthia,b.1810,m. Frederick Duke 1828. 3. William,b.1812. 4. Lucinda, b 1813,m.,Richard Williams,b.1835. 5. Madison, b.1815, 6. Johnston, b. 1817, m. Evaline Horn, 1839. 7. James Elgin, b1819, m. 1.Quintella Anderson1847, 2. Harriett Williams, 1856. The following children were probably born in Greene Co., Ala. 8. Clinton, b.ca 1821, died at age 4. 9. Caroline, b 1822, m. William Thames - 6 children The following were probably born in Madison Co., Ms. since James is there in the 1830 census, and had a deed in Greene Co. Ala in 1823. 10. Mary, b.1828 11. Franklin, b. 1831, m. Rebecca Anglin, and died at American Fork, Utah, 1909 12. Francis, b. 1832. James deeded gift to son John W. in March 1829, and also deeded to Thomas Coats, both in Geene Co. Ala, in March 1829. However, he is in Madison Co. census in 1830 in Ms. In 1850 census, he is in Newton Co. Ms. In 1860 his wife Elizabeth, along with his two kids, Madison and Mary are in Lauderdale Co., Ms. He had left in the mid 1850s, along with a girl "younger than his youngest daughter", and went to New Orleans with a buckboard, and a steamer trunk full of Confederate dollars. Later, he wrote a letter to Elizabeth and the kids, and asked to come home to die, as he was old and sick. They agreed, as long as he stayed on the first floor. Then he died in 1861. The plantation was "Shermanized" during the Civil War. It stood on a high hill, off the Valley Road about 8 miles south of Meridian. The area may have been know as Sageville at the time. He is buried in the Graham Cemetary, there on the Valley Road. His first son is Great-Great- Grandfather. Willl send more about him and his children later. John Coats
