I was mistaken about James coming from N.C. (looked at some old notes that were incorrect). According to our Hickman County History and also to his obit of 10-31-1879, James, who was called Jim, came from Virginia. He had two brothers, John, who settled in N.C. and William, who remained in Virginia. There are few male surnamed Coates from this line that I am aware of and it is doubtful if they would submit to DNA testing. I know that is the best way to ascertain connections between questionable lines. I am active on some MyFamily.com sites and have taken over the sponsorship of a Coates site that is not very active, but have begun a new MyFamily site called HassellsCreek, and I have a catagory for Coates on this.I have placed a copy of James' obituary on this site as well as his son, Sam's (my great grandfather) It is not limited to one family line, but includes many lines and anyone who has an interest in country living, stories from the past, scenic photographs, and this area of Tennessee where so many of our ancestors settled after coming over the mountains of N.C. into TN and from VA &S.C.also.
