(from a bible rec) d 5 Nov 1904 Lake County, CA (from obit) m PRESTON, Susan b 16 Sep 1849, AL (below) d 15 Sep 1927 San Francisco, CA (below) Russell Wilson b 1869 Contra Costa County, CA Fannie Amanda b 14 Oct 1870 d 17 Jan 1883 (from below given parents were J. R. and S. C. Coats) Edmund L. b 18 Jan 1873 Contra Costa County d 23 Oct 1926 Chico, CA (dates from below) William Preston b 1876 d 4 Mar 1933 San Francisco Susan Mabel b 1 Jun 1880 d 23 Jan ? (from below given parents were J. R?. and S. C. Coats) I'm assuming John Russell Coats lived with his parents or in the vicinity until he moved to Lake County (the voting record puts him there in 1882) thus the Contra Costa County birth locations. Frances Edmonson recently posted to the list (via Charlotte) mentioning John Russell attending School in Contra Costa County or a least that's how I remember it. In Bethel Sims (another surname as middle name) Coats journal he mentions Uncle Jack (John) visiting him. In the next entry he says that Ed and Russell bought mustangs. Bethel consistently gave last names to unrelated people. Given there were an Ed and Russell Coats in Lake County with ages that would fit as John Russell's children and the journal entries I'm listing them as sons. Russell Wilson Coats middle name is a strong clue given his grandfather was Wilson Coats. I still need to firm this up. Hopefully, I can find a will for John Russell. Lake County is only about 60-70 miles away For William Preston Coats, the middle name is a strong clue. He's also the right age to be a son and lived in the same county. Arthur Wilson Coats b 1851 is too old to be a son of Susan Preston b 1849. He could have been a son of a previous wife of John Russell as J. R. was 18 in 1851. It's pretty tenuous as 18 was pretty young to marry in those days. Wilson as a middle name might be a clue. On the negative side, Arthur Wilson was born in MO. I think J. R. had moved to California by that time. Maybe he's a cousin. Etta Coats b 1865 could have been a daughter by a previous marriage to J. R. or possibly the daughter of Susan Preston if she gave birth at the age of 16. Susan would have been 20 or 21 when Russell Wilson Coats was born. That covers everyone except William Henry Coats of PA and William Wilson Coats of WI who are too old and are from the wrong states to fit very well. I may of missed a few details. It's been a good genealogy hunting day especially considering Anita was kind enough to do most of the work for me. CA; registered in Middletown prct. on 02 Apr 1890 Many times you can tell when someone arrived in the county by the date they registered to vote.
