Hi, I think I am the descendant to the J.A. Coates of Pa that you are looking for. His name is John Armstrong Coates (30 Jan 1824(New London,PA)-24 Nov 1902 (Vineland, NJ))son of Thomas Coates (21 Feb 1791-19 Dec 1856) and Ann Armstrong (17 Jul 1796-24 Oct 1861) and married Mary Elizabeth Mackey (28 Oct 1842-14 March 1918) on 19 Dec. 1866. One of my cousins did a lot of this research and passed it on to me. I have some unknown newspaper accounts backing up some of the facts above. I have not done a lot of research on this branch, but what I have done, i.e., looking up censuses, seems to agree with what is written. I would not take this as gospel though. I have been lurking on this list for years. This is the first time that I have seen anything with my line on it! I can get back with you in the next couple of days, but then will be on vacation for a while. I will be glad to share all that I have. I have a lot more info if you would like it. There are no male direct descendants that I know of. Well, one of our members has a William Henry Coates who was born in 1845 in PA. William's death record says that William's parents were J.A. Coats (b. PA) and L.(b. KY). The researcher believes he's found their marriage record and J.A. stands for John. Could this be the same family? Would you mind sending us more on John's family and Thomas' family or a quick summary of Thomas's ancestors. Thanks so much for writing.
