Check police records. she may have been arrested during a demonstration along with hundreds of other women. Or perhaps a female ancestor was one of the thirty thousand women shirtwaist makers who went on strike in New York City in 1909 for better wages and working conditions. Many of these women were arrested and incarcerated. A year later, 146 women were killed in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. This shop refused to install fire escapes and kept workroom doors locked. Newspaper accounts would be invaluable if a female ancestor was part of these events. Or maybe one of your urban female ancestors worked in a birth control clinic at the turn of the twentieth century and was arrested.
