Wayne J Coates died November 27 2004, at age 93 in Accokee, Maryland. Funeral services for Wayne will be held 2: PM at Petty Funeral Home, Landrum, SC. Visitation will be Thursday evening 6:30 PM -8:30 PM. For those who did not know him, you have missed a great blessing. For those who did know him, The Preacher will be sorely missed. Wayne was of the Campobello line of Coates decended from Gabriel Garrett Coates. His family moved down from Madison county NC, Grapevine section, to seek employment in the Upstate of SC early in the 1900s. Many stopped off in the Mill Towns on the way into the heart of Spartanburg county which had 47 operating textile plants in its manufacturing hayday. For many years he made the trip down to SC to be at the Coates Family Reunion here. And as many other Coates, he made the trip each year to Weaverville NC for the Coates, Banks, Marner Reunion.
