    3. The time discrepancy here might be able to be accounted for. The murder trial took place in March of 1807 as far as I know... but that might not have been the time when James was tried as there were 2 persons being tried from memory. When was the verdict handed down? Do newspapers at the time show that James escaped after the verdict was read. What date is the 1808 document exactly? Maybe James left out of shame after being pilloried and having the cotton case go badly.... but some more research is needed in newspapers and court cases to figure out when he skipped town. The interesting note is though that we have three persons now who believed they were descended from Big John who are related to this Marmaduke Coate group and each other. Two descend through William and one descends through James. The others who thought they were descended aren't yet related to other tested Coates...
