Here is part of the deed I'm refering to...I'll finish and put it in the archive...there if I recall correctly is several records in this file, it's pretty big...most of the old deeds were lease and releases...so it looks like two deeds to the same parties...I don't know why they did that...has somthing to do I'm sure with the old English laws... But Capt Henry Coate, if I recall had wives named, Elizabeth and Polly Long, they were sisters...this Henry's wife's name is Mary and it shows Little John as an adjoining land owner on Scotch Creek to his land....now, if you recall Capt Henry Coate lived down by the Saluda River next to Benjamin Long...you will also recall in Marmaduke Coate's plat map of the villate of Newberry, shown in Pope's history, that Marmaduke shows a Henry Coates and a Henry Coate, because Marm spelled the names differently and as a surveyor he would be careful of detail, it appeared to me that there were two Henry's in Newberry Village both owning land...so I'm just saying we need to be careful, about lumping all these folks together just because they have the same first name...they may not be the same person....and indeed, I think these are two different Henrys.... This indenture made the ? 6 or 16 day of October in the Nineteenth year of American Independence and in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven Hundred and Ninety four between Henry Coate of Newberry County Ninety District and state of South Carolina and Mary his wife of the one part and Francis Alkin of the county aforesaid of the other part. Interesting discussion. There is a possibility that there is a Henry we haven't placed... The deed below by the way is not the deed that shows that Henry is a likely father to (Little) John married to Susannah.... But what it does point out is that the Capt. Henry connected to Little John in any major publication either has a wife named Mary before he marries the two Long sisters OR Little John's son is a different Henry and not the Capt. Henry always connected with him.... Let's recheck the Annals of Newberry where it talks about Little John and his son Henry parcelling out the land that created the town of Newberry.... I think it's in there where it lists his son as Capt. Henry. Both Marmauduke the surveyor and Capt Henry are the sons very commonly listed as the sons of Little John.
