1. Re: [COATES-L] Henry and "Little" John's land

    3. It's been assumed that John married Susannah and Little John were the same person...seems to me there is also another deed in the Archive that refers to Little John as well...it was a really dark deed or one that wasn't all that clear...I'll do some more checking... But I think in light of the fact that the deeds attributed to John and Susannah, don't call him little John and we know that Capt Henry m Priscilla or Elizabeth and Polly and Marmaduke had a father John...none of the records assciated with this group call John Little John... But there is a deed for a Henry Coate m to a Mary and in that deed it specifically referes to Little John as an adjoining land owner.... So it is just possible that these two Johns are not the same...and this deeds doesn't say who little John's wife was...and there is nothing in the records to indicate Capt Henry was married three times... Also, did the *Annals* have a source for where any of the info was gathered...if I recall correctly I don't believe it did, the only history out of Newberry County SC which is documented and sourced is Pope...the Callaway County MO History is the same i.e. not documented, doesn't tell you where any of the info came from...but if I had not found those deeds showing William Coats sold all his land in 1817, I would have viewed that history with a *slanted eye*...and likewise, although William Coats is supposed to have come from SC...it is possible he came from any of those states, because almost all those states were *The Carolinas* in those early days including GA... I just think we need to be careful jumping to conclusions without enough documentation to support the theories...we've already had another researcher post that they have a Henry married to a Mary...we can't just discount that... Dudick Sent: Monday, January 01, 2001 5:32 AM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] Henry and "Little" John's land Henry Coate purchased 200 acres from John Brooks on July 29, 1765. It was on Scotts Creek with no adjacent families. John Brooks had purchased it on Aug 26,1757. It consisted of some buildings and pasture lands. Then, (Little) John Coate and his wife Susannah sell to Peter Buffington 200 acres on Nov. 14, 1792. The land was on Scotts Creek, and was originally purchased by John Brooks on Sep. 19, 1758 (when transaction was completed). The filing of the deeds supports the fact that they were father and son, and that the parcel of land was the same parcel. Henry's purchase of 1765 was not filed until 1792 (years after Henry's death) and is filed directly before John and wife Susannah sell the same property to Peter Buffington. ==== COATES Mailing List ====

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

==== COATES Mailing List ====

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    3. :) Just like Big John and even more so, he's not consistently called Little John in the records.
