I am quoting from Summers' book on the Coates. COATS--John (known as "Little John"), was the original settler on the lands on which the town of Newberry is located. He gave to the town and the county two acres on which to erect a court house and other public buildings, and it is the same where is now the public square and old court House. This grant was made September 8, 1789, seven(?) years after the county was formed, to James Mayson, Philemon Waters, Robert rutherford, William Caldwell, and Jacob Roberts Brown, who were then the county judges, "a lot of two acres lying on a small hill West of the new dwelling house of John Coates...." John Coate's wife was named Susanna. He died about 1802. Two sons, Marmaduke and Henry, lived in the village. Henry married Elizabeth Long, daughter of Benjamin Long, and after her death he married her sister, Polly Long. Another John Coats died about 1803, his will being dated May 25, 1799. He left widow, Mary, and children: Samuel, John, William, James, Mary Pemberton, Katy Casselle, and Rebecca. Thomas Coate made will October 6, 1799, and died in the year 1800. He left widow, Sarah Ann, and children: James, Ann, Katy, Mary, William, Jesse,and Sarah. John Coate (of Georgia) died about 1803, and left widow, Mar, and children: Mary(wife of Robert Ramage), Rebecca (wife of Thomas Morgan), Anna (wife of Benjamin Lake.) Old John Coate died about 1802-1803, left widow, Rachel, and children: James, Sampson, Wright. Wright Coate made will Nov. 18, 1808, and died in same year. He left widow, Mary, and children: Frederick, Daniel, and Susan. Exr: John Belton O'neall. William Coate, Elizabeth Coate, Jesse Coate, and Sarah ( Coate) Summers, Hardy Fluker and his wife, Sophia (Coate) Fluker, of Edgefield Co., were some of the heirs of "Little John " Coate. One William Coate made will July, 1816, and died about 1822. He left widow, Mary, and children" John , Mary (married a Taylor), Sarah (wife of Patrick McKennan), Margaret, Ann, Dorothy, William, Reuben, Jesse. James Coate died in 1806 leaving widow, Rebecca, and children: Nancy (she died young), and Mary (married Joseph Hall). Mrs. Ann Coate made will March 20, 1805, and died same year. Her legatees were as follows: Daughter, Jean(she married a Vardaman), Nancy Cannon, Sarah Cannon,--sons: , by a former husband, George Johnson and Levi Johnson; grand-daughter, Mary Koone; grandson, Daniel Johnson. Samuel Coate died in 1807, and left widow, Mary and other legatees as follows; James Wilson, James Reeder, James Steadman, John Williams, John Taylor, Jesse Neel. Deliliah Coate. Captain Henry Coate (son of "Little John" ), died January, 1828, and left widow, Polly (Long) Coate, and children: Amelia (wife of John Lindsey), Elizabeth (wife of William G. Nance who died just before death of her father), John, James M., George R., Benjamin F., Amanda (she married Benjamin Cochran) William H., and Barbara. Benjamin F. and Amanda Cochran moved to Richmond , Va. Amelia Lindsey was the only child by his first marriage to Elizabeth Long. the widow, Polly, afterwards married John Gaskins, and descendants moved to MS.
