The author used a NC census index that appears to be in error. This index has Thomas still in NC in 1820. I have spent hours reading the microfilm of the 1820 Rowan census and Thomas is not there. There is a Thomas in Lincoln County, TN living right next to William COATS and what is believed to be the rest of his extended family. William and his group left Rowan for Lincoln County around 1812.
