In "The Annals of Newberry" it states he was a "very skillful mechanic, capable of executing almost anything, as a blacksmith, or as a silversmith. He left many children, two of whom, Henry Coate (Deputy of Sheriff John Speake) and Marmaduke (called Duke) Coate, lived at different times in the village, and had much to do with its prosperity."
