It seems unbelievable, but there were 3 distinct James Coatses, all born within about 5 years of each other, who married Elizabeths. One is our James Robert, another was James of Edgefield, and the other was James of Kentucky. The latter was shown in the 1850 census living by himself, while his wife Elizabeth was living with one of her daughter's family in Indiana. Unless this is James of Edgefield. I haven't checked to see where he was in 1850 or if he was still alive.
