I had all but forgotten about this order... But using the cites from the Persi Index you send the order to the Allen County Public Library in IN...it took about 2 months to get this info and all you get is the page or article you cite in the order... The initial cost sent with the order is $7.50 - that included a full set of orders i.e. the order has room for six articles you want...then they bill you .20/page for the material, in my case that was $2.60, which I now will sent them a check for.... Not bad, I'd say....:) Char _________________________________________________________________ Discover the best of the best at MSN Luxury Living. http://lexus.msn.com/

Clarke" <[email protected]> To: "Charlotte Coats" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [GAJEFFER] DNA Tests at FamilyTreeDna Date: Thu, 5 Aug 2004 09:50:18 -0400 Charlotte, I am looking for a possible Suzie COATS. We have a Suzie who married Professor Winfield Montgomery RIVERS (1824-1905) of James Island, SC BEF 1850. RIVERS was a graduate of Charleston College. In 1850 he was living with Mrs. Sarah Williamson Bird LAMAR in Newton County, GA. She was the widow of Judge L. Q. C. LAMAR of Milledgeville. Her parents were Dr. Thompson BIRD and Nancy WILLIAMSON of Milledgeville. I think Suzie was a CAPERS because the CAPERS was close to this RIVERS family but their genealogy is worse than some of our DANIEL families. However, my cousin, Dr. Anne KILPATRICK of Atlanta told me of a COATS cousin who lived in SC. I have forgotten her first name. I do know a Parmelia SHECUTT was living with my grand uncle, Mat RICHTER and his wife, Hallie Elise RIVERS (1850-1935) in 1880 in Madison, GA. Hallie was the daughter of Professor RIVERS and this Suzie. I also know that this Suzie died in 1862 in a typhoid epidemic and her and RIVERS children then went to live with his mother, Elizabeth Royall RIVERS on James Island. RIVERS was then in Hampton's Legion but he must have been discharged by the summer of 1864 because then he is in Jefferson County, GA where he was a witness on the will of James S. SPEIR in Jefferson County, GA. This will was executed by my GGF, Robert W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865). Several years later RIVERS married my GGF's widow, Mary Jane RENEAU, the d/o Rev. Russell RENEAU, who had been a Presiding Elder in the GA Conference of the ME Church. Russell and his wife, Elizabeth STOCKTON, lived in Oxford when Mary Jane (1830-1912) married Robert DANIEL in 1852 in Jefferson County, GA. Mary Jane, my GGM, was RWD's third or fourth wife. Exactly which one, I am not sure. Does any of this sound familiar? John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find. Char, You've done a fantastic job covering PA documents and I for one am very grateful for all your work! I know what you mean about dealing with some organizations with a simple request for information - I usually have better luck finding some kind person in the area generous enough to just to go the "building" and make copies for me (I repay their costs). I think what irks me the most are the organizations that do not even have the manners to acknowledge your letter. My main area of research has been VA (regarding another surname) and I have had success dealing with the the county courthouses for copies and the Library of VA which does offer interlibrary loans of their microfilms. I have had some luck with PA & MD sources but found the better known organizations rather expensive. --------------------- But to finish off what I have found regarding Elizabeth Coates - daughter of Isaac Coates (died 1786)..... Second Presbyterian Church Marriages 1763-1812, Philadelphia, PA 1792, June 20, Coates, Elizabeth and John Vanclever 1808, May 4, Lewis, Lewis and Elizabeth Van Cleve according to Van Cleve researchers John Wright Van Cleve (h/o Elizabeth Coates) died in 1802 but I since they also list a daughter named Elizabeth I am not sure if it was the widow or the daughter (who was likely too young) who married Lewis Lewis in 1808 or perhaps neither. One last connection that may eventually offer some insight - John W. VanCleve was listed as executor in the will of Peter Brown written in 1799. But in 1804 Browne added a codicil changing executors (according to VanCleve researchers John W. is now deceased). Peter Browne's will was proved in 1810 - his connection to the family of John Coates & Mary Hale is that he married Sarah the daughter of Mary Coates [sister of Isaac Coates] & Isaac Dutton. Elizabeth Coates/Van Cleve and Sarah Dutton/Browne would have been cousins IF Elizabeth is the daughter of Isaac s/o John & Mary Coates. Well most interesting....have you run into a Lewis Coats/Coates out of PA, that's another dead end (see Gup, I'm thinking of you....:)), he shows up in KY then TN or visa versa...but he's another one that whence he came, we just don't know...no DNA for his line either...all these daughtered out Coats/Coate/Coates or just the daughters are looking....:) Anyway...I find it very difficult to remain in CA and not be able to just sit and look through all those old records on the East coast, most distressing...I just know we'd find the answers or at least some documented guesses... Which brings to mind...the Coats in SC and Coarts in MD...boy, that is something...but it sure all fits really well....I also found Notley's will and estate papers in the Chester County SC Will books...and his name is spelled Cotes in those...recall William of Camden was spelled Cotes and Coats in that Newberry County SC deed.... The other thing as with PA, MD, NJ and VA for that matter....those areas are really close...so any of those families could have fanned out in the next generation...but MD to SC that's quite a jump I must admit....and the name Charles just comes out of the blue....have you seen any Charles' in PA or VA ? Maryland, boy, that sure seems to me that it might be a migration down from the New England states...but it appears to me, that Charles is there in 1780s, but no will for him among those wills I found, that seems unusual as well, at least an estate record of some type...usually there is something inventory, sale if not a will....but where did he come from before Maryland?? And could Charles and William in SC also be his sons ....it appears however, the name Notley ended with him in Chester County SC though.... What a puzzle that drives me nuts!! If you are a Male Coats/Coate/Coates or other variation on this list...please, please, please, please consider joining the DNA project, if you have not already....that is such a great help I think...also, if you find it's too expensive for you, let me know, we'll find the funding...and remember when you order the kits via our project you get a reduced rate.... ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Bill Liles" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> CC: <[email protected]> Subject: Chester County Flintons Creek Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 16:00:27 -0500 Dear Sir or Madam, I surfed across your Coats website while persuing some research on lands owned by my ancestors, John and Agnes Cockrell Liles (sometimes spelled Lyles) in Chester County SC. I noticed your comment about being unable to locate Flintons Creek in the persuit of locating one tract. I, too, am unable to pinpoint Flinton Creek's exact location, but I am quite sure of a more general location that might also be helpful to you. My Liles ancestors were among the first settlers of the South Carolina up country, coming in the early 1740's. Arromanus Liles, son of Ephraim Liles, was supposedly was the first white child born in the SC up country. I descend, most likely, from Ephraim's father, also named John Liles or this John's brother of unknown name. Most of the Liles (Lyles) settled near the confluence of the Broad and Sandy Rivers very near the present border of Chester and Fairfield Counties. They operated a ferry across the Broad River into Newberry County. I always assumed that the lands of my John Liles were also located in that area. However, carefully tracking several deed records from the estate of my GGGG Grandfather, John Liles, who died in 1790, to his wife and children led me to realize that their lands were on the Little Sandy River, a tributary of the Sandy. Among other adjacent land owners were the Trussells who's son married Elizabeth Liles, sister of my GGG Grandfather Samuel Liles and daughter of John and Agnes Cockrell Liles. Also among the deeds and plats in my possession, I identified a plat of the Franklin land which I believe lies on the other side of the Trussell land which is adjacent to my Liles lands. Your Coats ancestor's land is this previous Franklin land or adjacent to it. In identifying this location, I followed the Little Sandy River by drilling down into MapQuest and then followed the river to just east of the community of Cornewell on SH 321 south of Chester. There I found a road identified as Trussell Rd. Further investigation revealed that it was the current road leading to lands on the Little Sandy River. I feel strongly that is the area of my Liles lands as well as your Flinton Creek tract, which is a tributary of the Little Sandy, and is not near the Sandy and Broad Rivers as apparently your investigation led you. I also came across a timber company that had lands listed for sale near these tracts on the internet and upon further investigation, it is very possible that their tracts, which I am now told, lie at the end of Trussell Rd. may be the old Liles or Trussell lands and of course very close to the location of the land you were seeking. They are sending me additional information and are checking to see if they have an abstract. I have tried to go through the Chester County Courthouse unsuccesfully to find the location of the lands listed on my plats and deeds but they can only go forward, not backward. It appears that in reading your site that you were able to locate several of your lands on the ground. I tried following some of your SC gvmt. links but got nowhere. My Liles lands were the original grants of the State. I would appreciate any help you might be and would be willing to share with you any information you might find useful. Regards, Bill L. Hi Anne, What do your records show about the family? If you are confirming that the Isaac that died in 1786 is the son of John & Mary do you possibly have any details to offer on his unnamed wife? Were his children limited to Isaac, Abraham, Elizabeth, and was there only a Jacob or was there also a John? Did they remain in the PA area? Thank you for replying to my posting - maybe with your help we will be able to clear up some of the Coats/Coates mysteries. Does anyone on the list have any documentation to confirm or correct the following family group? I think that the children of Isaac are secure but I am unsure of his connection to parents John & Mary. Isaac Coates s/o John Coates & Mary Hale born after 1712 died by 1786 marriage details unknown but likely more than one. (an adult by 1754 in father's will but in 1786 lists minor daughter in his will) children - Isaac Coates - no further information Abraham Coates - died 1804 wife Frances John Coates - possibly also listed as Jacob Coates - died after 1804 Elizabeth Coates - died after 1804 married to John Wright Van Cleve of N.J. documentation used was obtained from ancestry.com (so possibly contain errors)..... 1) 1754/60 will of John Coates names children Warwick, Isaac, Rebecca, Abraham, John Jane, Sarah, Mary & Hannah. 2) abstract of will of Isaac Coates written May 25, 1786 / proved Sept. 7, 1786 Coates, Isaac. Northern Liberties, Co. of Philadelphia. Brickmaker. children: Isaac, Abraham, John and Elizabeth. Exec. Isaac Coates, Manuel Eyre and guardians for daughter Elizabeth. (note - Manuel Eyre is the son in law of Isaac's sister Mary) 3) abstract of will of Abraham Coates written August 8, 1797 / proved March 7, 1804 Coats, Abraham, Northern Liberties of Philadelphia.
