We have a new Coats member in the DNA project...he has just ordered a kit... We still have three kits that have not been returned to the lab yet... and we have one 37 marker test which is at the lab and has an approx return date of 11/20/04 Anyone else?? If you are on our list and you are male with a surname of Coates, Coate, Coats or a variation and they are getting numerous....:) please consider participating in our DNA project...this is one more piece of the puzzle....so see where you fit....:) If you are not a male with a surname Coates, Coate or Coats or a variation but you have a Coates, Coate or Coast cousin or uncle...that would work as well... I look forward to seeing the list of participants grow...:) We have about 20 or 30 dollars in our DNA fund...but I'm sure if we needed funding for someone, that would be covered....so anyone that needs a *grant* is welcome to contact me and we'll work it out... Have a great Sunday!! Char

That should be *has a profile DNA signature* but that particular name Couts, has a profit DNA signature out of the Shetland Islands and it doesn't match any from our DNA group... Char
Well, at this point, I don't know....:) we've found variations of Coarts/Courts in MD, although most of the original records show Courts, the name has been transcribed as Coates and at least one Coarts thus far has been traces from MD to SC and in SC the name is spelled Coats/Cotes...so it could be a variation...but without doing a thorough search of the original records it would be hard to say...Couts in TN has been transcribed as Coats...but that particular name Couts, has a profit DNA signature out of the Shetland Islands and it doesn't match any from our DNA group... I'd say the best way to find out or what would help, would be for a Choate surnamed male to particiapte in our DNA project....:) it could take the guessing out of it....:) You can find information on our DNA project at: Coate, Coates, Coats Archive http://www.coatsarchive.us These wide name variations by the way, I don't think is uncommon in that early 1700/1600 period...apparently this is true in a great many families....but the DNA testing has helped to sort the families out....:) Char ----Original Message Follows---- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: [COATES-L] Re: COATES-D Digest V04 #177 Date: Fri, 29 Oct 2004 10:14:54 EDT There is a feature about the "Choate" family from the Va/MD area, 18th century, at the Smithsonian Museum of Technology in DC. It seems that every list I have belonged to has at one time discussed Migration Routes - this site was shared on one of those mailing lists and I found it to have a great deal of information to offer on the subject - http://www.cob-net.org/docs/brethrenlife_migrations.htm#movewest
Question, I've seen some emails that list other places Elijah could be living. Ex. 1813 Taxes for Wilkinson County, Mississippi list Elijah Coats owning 80 acres on Buffaloe Creek.... but at least one record after this shows an Elijah on the tax lists in Barnwell, SC owning 200+acres of land. Also, could he be this Elijah? In the 1820 census for Mississippi, Elijah Coates is listed in the Territorial Census with 2 white males over 21, 0 white males under 2, 2 white females over 21, 1 white female under21; 5 total white; 0 free colored; and 1 slave, total of 6 in his household. Was this our Major we were looking for? Wonder if he's got kids...kinda sounds like he's pretty young and not married?? Thanks, Gup....:) Char ----Original Message Follows---- From: [email protected] To: Charlotte Coates <[email protected]> Subject: Interesting Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 13:48:08 -0500 KFMB.COM SOLDIER SAYS MISSION NOT REFUSED FROM FEAR (10-21-2004) - A soldier from an Army Reserve unit whose members refused to deliver fuel along a dangerous route in Iraq says he and others did not act out of fear, as the soldier's father has said. "We are not cowards," Spc. Major Coates told The Charlotte Observer for a report published Thursday. "The way that things come out, it makes us look like that ... Our soldiers have run missions all over Iraq; we're never scared to go on a mission." Coates was among 19 members of a platoon from the 343rd Quartermaster Company, based in Rock Hill, S.C., who last week refused to transport supplies from Tallil air base near Nasiriyah to Taji north of Baghdad. He called the newspaper Wednesday, saying he wanted to correct statements made in interviews by his father, John Coates. The specialist said his father may have gotten details wrong because he was upset about what happened. Relatives have said that the soldiers' trucks were broken down, that they lacked a proper armed escort and that the fuel they were to deliver was contaminated. Army officials dispute that account and say they are investigating. The reservists could face courts-martial. Coates said he was wearing body armor during the mission, though his father said he was not. Coates, a water treatment specialist, also said he was properly trained to deploy to Iraq but acknowledged that when he arrived, officials "did not tell us we were infantry now," as his father had said. And he said his father was wrong when he said soldiers banded together in refusing the order. "We did not form a group on the decision we made," Coates said. "Everyone made their own individual decision to do what we thought best." If soldiers acted as a group in what the military considers a mutiny, they could receive a more severe punishment than if they acted individually. John Coates was out of town Thursday and unavailable for comment, Major Coates' stepmother, Stephanie Parks, said from their home in Mount Holly, N.C. Parks said the couple believes soldiers are now getting the equipment they need to do their jobs safely. "We're just satisfied with the way things are going," she said. Major Coates declined to comment about whether he was mistreated by military authorities, as some relatives have alleged. "I'm serving my time to my country because I love America," he said. "If the leaders do their part, I do my part." Parks said her stepson was detained at gunpoint for up to 18 hours but has said nothing about further discipline. "He's still in Iraq, I guess, still working," she said. "(He's) saying it's better than it was."
Well my excitement from yesterday was for nothing. The book with St. Helena Parish Successions is a book I had already seen . Succession Records of St. Helena Parish 1804-1854 page 162 Elijah P. Coats Judge St. Helena Parish year 1825. I've already gone to St. Helena once but, I believe I'm going to make another trip probably next week. There has to be something more than one document with Elijah Coats name on it . Also, Abner Glover and Wm. Hickman were in St. Helena Parish,LA at one time as was one of Pollard Coats sons. Moses Tylar (m) Elizabeth Hickman was there 'I believe ' ** Elizabeth Hickman was Pollard Coats aunt. (A sister to Helena Hickman) Wm. Tylar may have also been in St Helena Parish,LA as well. Please, wish me luck. Sorry, Robbie
