    2. Hi Everyone, Does anyone know Andrea Slater? I last heard from Andrea in 1992, at which time she was researching the Coates family. Her mother is Audrey Frank, and at that time they were living in Colonial Beach, VA. I'd like to hear from Andrea, for she may know of a Coates family reunion that takes place annually in Colonial Beach. Thanks much. -June Sumner

The transcription of the West Line Street Cemetery (also called the Pioneer Cemetery) is online at Interment.net. I see your William L. Coats listed there. Their should be a binder at the entrance of the cemetery (right behind the hospital in West Line Street). The binder should tell you the location of the plot. I also see several other burials with the Coats name there so the cemetery transcriptions might help you a lot in your research. The folks at the County Clerk's office in Independence (in the Inyo County Courthouse) are super. If you stop there on your way to Bishop I'm sure that they will be able to help you. The Superior Court office is the next door down from the Clerk's office so if you need to look up any divorce papers or other court proceedings. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask. Denise

    1. William Layfette Coats.
    2. Curt Rowe
    3. Found this obituary on the USGenWEB site for Inyo County, California for William Layfayette Coats, son of Wilson Coats, son of Rev. William Coats: Paid Nature's Last Debt Well Known Citizens of Ripe Years Pass Into Eternity William L. Coats William Coats, died at the Elmhurst Sanitarium Monday night about 8 o'clock. He was stricken by paralysis recently, and had been in the sanitarium since the early part of last week. Mr. Coats came to California in 1950, with an ox team, by way of El Paso. Tuolumne county, Mariposa and Solano County were among his places of residence in the State. It is understood he was Sheriff of one of the mid-California counties at one time. He lived here for thirty years or more, and made sheep-raising his business during part of that time. He was at one time the owner of mountain lands now including Andrews Camp. During that period some damage was done to the property by high water, and the suit he brought against the Hillside Water Company for damages, alleging the bursting of the company's dam at South Lake, and was a case of great local interest at the time. So far as positively known here, he is survived by but one brother, Lemuel L. Coats, of Santa Monica, father of John P. Coats, of Bishop. His age is stated to have been 86 years, 2 months, 23 days. The Inyo Register, Bishop, Inyo County, California March 22, 1917 Transcribed by Pat Houser for Inyo County GenWeb, December 29, 2004 The Lemuel L. Coats mentioned is Lemuel A. Coats. Obviously the 1950 is a typo. It should be 1850.

    3. We have a new Bible Record for Wilson Coats, son of Rev Will at: http://www.coatsarchive.us/tennesse.html Smith County right under the Bible record for Rev Will...it also confirms the date for Wilson's birth as well as shows his birth place as Smith County TN....there is also a Bible record of Isaac Agee in the same group of records.... This information comes from Frances Edmonston, from the James Longstreet Coats line, son of Felix Grudy Coats, son of Wilson Coats...some interesting notes of Frances' father was: In reference to the Coats' family: Although the exact date of his birth is unknown it is believed that William Coats was born in the old 96 District of South Carolina in the 1760s. His father is believed to have been another William Coats (he has Williams but that was another family line, I'm sure he's confused the last name since he then describes William Coats' will and kids....) who made a will in South Carolina. The will was made in Kershaw County, S.C. 15 June, 1783 and probated in 15 Dec 1784. In it he mentioned a daughter Ann and another daughter Priscilla Coats, as well as sons: Barton Coats, Wilson Coats, William Coats and Benjamin coats. His wife was Frances Coats. The maker of the above will is believed to have been the son of another William Coats who was first in PA, then in New Jersey and Maryland. From there to Rowan County N.C. and then to South Carolina. All this, however is just sepculation without valid proof.... I found the migration pattern interesting...PA to NJ to MD, NC then SC....I also believe at present that the Charles Coats in Frederick County MD came from another area outside of MD, since he doesn't see to fit into any of the other Coats' in that area....including Charles County MD....and apparently there is no Will or estate records for him in MD...so he may as well have moved from the MD area before he died....

    3. Char, Thank you so much for this wonderful website and the Heritage Quest on-line website. I have found so many wonderful Revolutionary war records including what I believe proves that Austin Murphy or Murray Coates married to Lucinda Dismukes is not the son of William Coates who married Susannah Dismuke.(She is a cousin to Susannah how ever) In William Coates Pension record he states he has a son (Austin) that is unmarried but, has built a fine house in Virginia and plans to move to Virginia. In Susannah Dismuke (widows pension) (m) this same William Coates she states in 1820 that their son (Austin)and his "family" are living in Virginia. Austin Murray or Murphy Coates was not married to Lucinda Dismukes until 1824 in Davidson Tennessee. They move to Mississippi. This William and Susannah Dismuke Coates did move from Sportslvania (Maybe mispelled)Virginia to Davidson Tennessee. I believe they are related but, Austin M. is not their son Austin. The Dismuke family also, say that William had a daughter named Sallie that married a Dismuke. Sallie is not named in either pension record as a daughter. They both say they have "A" son named Austin. Please, I would love some input if someone thinks I am missing something or has proof that I am wrong in my observation. I don't mind being told I am wrong if there is proof. Bye the way there were quite a few Dismuke's that went to Mississippi and Louisiana. Some are buried in the same grave yards with my Coates. This is one reason I am so interested in this group. One of my Austin Marion Coates wife's (Margaret Coon) uncle also, moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in the early 1800's. I just find all this very interesting to say the least. 3. Good catch Charlotte - that is why I put the disclaimer on the will abstracts since the will abstracts at Ancestry.com have messed up in the past by including a Benjamin Coates in a will when he was not in the original (it was suggested they may have misread bequeath). If the will is Samuel Preston Jr. then I think when he refers to Sisters in Law Mary & Margaret Coates and Ruth Webb it may actually read (or intend) Mary Langdale/Coates as sister in law and her daughter Margaret Coates who was mentioned in the will of Samuel Coates as receiving items from grandparents Samuel & Margaret Preston. An online search of various family trees which include Samuel Preston do not seem to list a Samuel Preston Jr. but did include (again I can't guarantee the accuracy of the data but hope that the Preston researchers did their homework).... from "Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania, Volumes I-III Carpenter and Preston Family-- Samuel Preston succeeded Samuel Carpenter as Provincial Treasurer in 1714, and held that office until his death, September 10, 1743." and "The Provincial Councilors of Pennsylvania 1733-1776 -- Preston became Provincial Treasurer in 1714 , and held the office until his death, almost thirty year s. He was also one of the Trustees under William Penn 's will. He died September 10, 1743 . He m., 1st, at the house of Francis Cornwall in Sussex , July 6, 1688 Rachel , dau. of Thomas Lloyd , President of the Council. He m., 2nd, Margaret , wi dow of Josiah Langdale . She was a Quaker preacher from Yorkshire, England , and came to Pennsylvania on a religious mission in 1723 , her first husband dying on the voyage. She was ancestress of Josiah Langdale Coates , and d. 6, 23, 1742 , in t he 58th year of her age" If the information offered on the family trees is correct then Margaret Burton/Langdale/Preston died a year before her husband Samuel Preston so she would not have been listed on the 1743 will (if it is Samuel Sr's will). But without reading a copy of the actual document is all boils down to guess work. If someone is interested they could try tracing the other people listed in the 1743 will to see how they interrelate to the Preston family which should help clear up which Samuel it was. But interesting is the Samuel Coats of Philly who died in 1748: http://www.coatsarchive.us/pennsylvdocs.html Linda, is he the one you have listed as married to Mary Langsdale...it would appear that his will names his daughter Margaret's grandparents as Margaret and Samuel Preston... I do not know much at all and am running into brick walls. I was told by a 2nd cousin that the Coates' were from Pennsylvania. I have no living relatives left to ask questions. I know that my grandfather, my mother's dad, who was John Wesley Coates, came from Nacogdoches County, Texas. His father was Charles Conner Coates. I believe he could have been from Alabama. I cannot find anything on him, except I know he died in Texas, possibly Knox County. If I could just make this connection, I believe I could proceed. Do you happen to have anything that might be helpful? Thank you for your time. Sandra Schmidt [email protected]
