    1. New theory: maternal ancestry of Wm Coats of Rowan Co.NC
    2. Larry Coats
    3. Hello all, Will apologize in advance for the length of this one, but I couldn't find a way to condense it; anyway, I have a new theory regarding the maternal ancestry of Wm Coats of Rowan Co. NC. As you read this, please note the names that I cite in all caps. Maybe coincidence is working again, but I don't think so. Would appreciate comments and help with any details that have escaped me so far. 1st: I think it is generally accepted by those working in the Rowan Co. NC Coat(e)s group that Wm Coats of Rowan had a brother named Henry "Cotes"(d.c. 1790)and probably a sister, Louise Rene Coats(who married a Jacob Sutton). And there may well have been others that I can't absolutely place in the tree yet, such as Benjamin Coats. 2d: Henry "Cotes"by wife Sussanah Elliott had at least one son, ALLEN/ALLIN Coates, b.c. 1770. Louis Rene Coats and Jacob Sutton had a son James WILEY Sutton, and Wm Coats of Rowan had a number of sons, including WILEY Coates, who married a Sarah ADAMS. 3rd: Noting the names ALLIN and WILEY, I think that it is at least possible, if not probable, that Henry "Cotes" and Wm Coats above were the sons of Wilson William Coats(b.c. 1725, d.?)and that his wife was likely ________WILEY/WYLY. Here's why I think this. I found a Thomas Willey/Wyly/Wiley b.c. 1703 Ireland, who was a Quaker and a member of New Garden MM in PA before 1754. It also appears that this Thomas was the son of an ALLIN/ALLEN WILEY(b.c. 1670 and d.c. 28 Mar 1748), a member of the Kennet MM in PA(Chester Co.?). However, he is variously styled as being of Cecil Co. MD and/or Chester Co. PA. Allin Wiley was married c. 1694 to a SARAH ADAMS(b.c. 1661-1675, prob. in Westmeath, Ireland, d. 16 Oct 1706 in PA/MD. I naturally am wondering if she is somehow related to the Sarah Adams, who, at a much later date, married Wiley Coates in NC. Maybe coincidence, maybe not. 4th: Thomas Wiley(b.c. 1703 and liv. in PA bef. 1754)apparently married in 1729 to a Rachel Rowland in PA or MD, but removed with a certificate from New Garden MM to Cane Creek MM(NC)on 10-05-1754. His wife Rachel and one unnamed dau. were apparently with him. However, by 4-3-1762, Thomas was disowned by Cane Creek MM and was apparently never taken back "into the fold", so to speak as there is no further record of him among the Quakers in NC. I also noted that the western edge of the Cane Creek MM "jurisdiction"(if that is the right word)was very, very close to Davidson Co. NC(Old Rowan), and since I haven't found any other Wiley/Wyly families in the same proximity to the Coat(e)s families in Rowan, I am wondering if this Thomas might be the father of the wife of Wm Coats???? At this point, I am still working from the presumption that Wilson Wm Coats and son Wm were originally in or near Edgecombe Co. NC before moving west into Old Rowan. 5th: However, despite all of the above, I must state that my theory is not without some hazards. Thomas Wiley may have died before 1772 as a Rachel Wyly was disowned by Cane Creek MM in 1772 for marrying a Benj. Few, a non-Quaker; she may have been the widow of Thomas or his daughter or neither. If she was the daughter, then I am in trouble already. In addition, the Cane Creek MM records also show a Elizabeth Wyly SHARP being disowned in 1763 for marrying out of unity. Similarly in 1772, a Ruth Wiley was disowned as well as a Wm Wiley. I don't if or how these last three are connected to Thomas. Also, Thomas Wyly had these brothers: Wm(1707-1775) John(b.c. 1695) Joseph(1697-1751) And I have not yet traced their travels or their immediate descendants. They may have gone to NC as well or they may have stayed put or moved elsewhere. Should add here that Thomas Wyly also had three sisters: Mary, Margaret, and MARTHA, which brings me to my next point. 6th:Just to round out my idea, I should add that ALLIN WYLY/WILEY(c.1670-1748)was, per info found on the Wiley list in rootsweb, the son of a HENRY WEILLY(b.c. 1632, Gloucester, England, d.c. 2 July 1690 Ireland)by his wife, MARTHA_________. Now from this point, I am going to become even more theoretical, but bear with me while I sort it out.... I think that the Martha above is identical to a MARTHA ALEN, who is shown in the IGI as having been born c. 21 Sept 1636 in Dublin, Ireland, and while I may be making a very long shot here, she MAY have been the daughter of a JAMES ALEN, b.c. 1617 St. Wolstans, Co. Kildare, Ireland, the son of Nicholas Alen, b.c. 1597 at St. Wolstan's by his wife, Aminet Barnewall(of the Barnewalls of Crickstown, Meath). And James Alen apparently married Ann Dillon, dau. of James Dillon, 1st Earl of Roscommon(liv. 1622). Now while I may be wrong about Martha ALEN being the dau. of James, etc., of St. Wolstan's, Co. Kildare, I think that the discovery of the ALLIN WILEY(1670-1748)provides if not a definitive answer to how the names ALLEN/ALLIN and WILEY managed to make their way into the Coat(e)s family in Old Rowan Co. NC. If anyone can throw more light on Wiley/Wyly/Willey families in or near Old Rowan Co. NC or, on Allin Wiley or any of his immediate descendants, we might be able to turn my theory into something better(I hope)and piece together the rest of the Coat(e)s line before they arrived in Old Rowan. For the moment, I am still thinking that Wm Coats of Rowan was a grandson of the John Pomery Coats of Pasquotank Co. NC, but I also know that the iron-clad proof for this is still not there. Am hoping John D. Coates is still monitoring the list as this theoretical reconstruction involves his line as well, and I was hoping he might be able to criticize or see something else that I've missed. Regards to all, Larry

    2. Hello, I received this from another list and printed it out for my own reference. Gup A very useful publication of the Bureau of the Census, Measuring America, The Decennial Censuses, 1790-2000, is available online at: http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/ma.html This book (online in seven parts) contains population census forms and instructions to the census enumerators for censuses from 1790-2000. I have found the printed copy very useful, too.

THANK YOU for your quick response...and I have to apologize for my slow reply. Wednesday I was swamped with one thing after another. Yesterday was "doctor" day 35 mi from home, plus some shopping up there, and today is wash day...but I'm not letting THIS day pass without responding to some e-mails. Like you, I'm fearful of changing e-mail addresses for fear of losing family history contacts!! My CRAIG branch--from Straid (near Gracehill, which is near Ballymena), County Antrim, N.Ireland--first arrived in America in 1864--just two weeks or 2 mos--depending on who is telling the story, and we can't find the ship they came on) before my grandfather was born in Brooklyn. Then in 1865/66, they migrated on to southern Illinois, and I have a "gut" feeling they went to relatives there...but whether it was of the CRAIG family or the associated McCLURKIN family, I don't know...maybe both. The McClurkins landed in SC in the 1700's, and may have come with your Craigs. I just can't help feeling there are connections we are not seeing among some of these different groups!!! RIGHT!! The paper trail is pretty iffy...especially when you get into Ireland!! We have my CRAIG line back to John, b 1717, probably in Larne, Co. Antrim, and his brother Adam, b 1718. But we have no parents for them, nor a clue when they arrived from Scotland, except Grandpa said his ancestors only left Scotland because they were directed to go to N.Ireland and put down the Irish who were giving the English king all kinds of fits. Somehow I got clear out of high school with never having had a history course! I didn't dodge it--have always loved anything associated with history! But I don't have dates and places in my head! I'd guess it was in the latter 1600's, early 1700's that the Irish found Scots taking over N.Ireland, but I don't know that! IF there is a connection from a COATS family to my great-grandmother Jane DUNBAR CRAIG, it would be in N.Ireland, as she was born in (or about) 1823, and she and her husband James didn't bring their family to America until 41 yrs after that. Getting "across the pond" with this ancestry was something else!!! THANKFULLY I had a cousin, though he was not a genealogist, he was interested in the CRAIG origins; he was in England and decided to go to Ireland before coming back to the USA and search out the Craigs. I gave him what clues I had, and he and his wife spent the better part of two weeks searching, until he FOUND them in a little Moravian church in Gracehill! What info we have on them comes from the parish registers of that church. I also have a smidgeon of info from Griffith's Evaluation of 1862. What are some of your Craig names who came to America in the mid-1700's?? I have just a little on a couple of Craig families who came in that time period. Please do keep in touch. I keep hoping all of these things will Click and come together sometime!!! THANKS again... I hope you are still at this "address!" This morning my cousin Barbara sent me an e-mail she had gotten from you sometime back relative to the possibility that our DUNBAR great-grandmother was the daughter of a COATS/COATES woman who married into a Dunbar family in the early 1800's in Belfast, or surrounding area, and had a daughter, Jane Dunbar, born 1823. Jane (for whom I am named) married James "Red" CRAIG in the 1840's and had a large family in Straid (near Gracehill and Ballymena, County Antrim), North Ireland. We have Craig genealogy for a couple more generations before that, but Jane has been a mystery for all 53 years I've been searching for her. There seems to be just NOTHING! James had been raised a Moravian, and when he married "outside the faith," he was ousted, but James was received back in and they took in Jane, too--and they were Moravians in Brooklyn, NY...then became staunch Presbyterians in Illinois and Kansas. The theory keeps popping up--TRADITION, you know--that Jane's mother was a COATS, and we seem to be unable to either prove or disprove that idea! Can you shed any light on it?? When his first wife Rebecca Gauntt died, he married her sister, Mary Gauntt Coats. Mary was the widow of William Coats, and they had sons Daniel P. and Frederick. Thomas and Mary moved from Newberry County to Limestone Co., AL sometime in the late 1820s. Daniel had moved to Nacadoches County, TX by 1850. Jane

If you are a Family Tree DNA customer, having already been tested for the Y-DNA or the mtDNA, there is no need to purchase a kit from the Genographic Project. In a few weeks we will make available in your personal page at Family Tree DNA, a tool that will allow you to upload your results to The Genographic Project and have your own personal page there. There will be a nominal fee for this upload, and proceeds from this fee will be directed to the Genographic's Legacy Project , which will support education and cultural preservation projects among participating indigenous groups. Also, and very important, I was asked by Spencer Wells to post the following message to the list. 3. SENATOR KEEPS 1898 TAX FROM NET US Sen. George Allen has announced a bill to prevent the IRS and the Treasury Department from levying a 3 percent federal excise tax to e-mail, broadband links, or VoIP services. Congress enacted the so-called "luxury" excise tax at 1 cent a phone call back in 1898, when only a few thousand phone lines existed in the country. http://news.com.com/2100-1028_3-5662952.html

    1. Lemuel and John Coats

    3. I think I've found about all I'm going to find for the moment for John Russell Coats and his descendents and Lemuel Allen Coats and his descendents. They were sons of Wilson Coats who was the son of Rev. William Coats. Thanks to Frances Edmonston and Charlotte, I've also added a number of pictures. The information is extensive so I'm not going to list it here. Please visit http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~amcolan/Coats/coats.html and start in Generation Four. Clicking on the first set of pictures will take you to additional ones. The destination pages contain a lot of picture so will take awhile to download on a slow connection. I hope someone finds the information useful. Good hunting, Curt Rowe
