    2. Coats Family History
    3. FYI...this is probably old research she's found of mine, 2001, hmmm, looks more like it was from the list info...but thought I'd pass this along, ...hmmm, don't we have a DNA group for this John Alexander Coats? Char ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <EllnMarcus@aol.com> Date: Tue, Aug 4, 2009 at 5:22 PM Subject: Coats and Bennett family genealogy To: coats.genealogy@gmail.com Dear Charlotte, I found information online that you'd provided to John Coats back in 2001 on RootsWeb. RootsWeb: COATES-L Re: [COATES-L] Fw: John Alexander Coats<http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/COATES/2001-09/1001643486> . Your old email was AbileneFlash@aol.com. That address no longer works, but upon further investigation, I found what I hope is you at your new email address. I've been looking for any children of William Bennett and Mary Amundsen for years now, and your info led me to Wm Jennings BRYAN Bennett who married Alta Lee Coats abt 1920 --thanks so much! Is there any chance you are in contact with Bennetts who know anything about the Bennett history? If so, I would love to pick their brains--the family is very small. Bryan Bennett (b. 1896) was the son of William Bennett (birth date unknown) and Mary Jane Amundsen (b.1864). My great-grandfather was Sam Bennett (Bill's brother), and my great-grandmother was Louisa Amundsen (Mary Jane's sister). Two brothers married two sisters. Here is a picture of Bryan's parents, Bill and Mary Bennett. My grandmother told me her uncle Bill was a veterinarian in New Orleans; he died young--in his late 30's. Mary must have died in her 40's, since on his WWI draft registration, Bryan names his uncle (my grandmother's father) Sam Bennett of W. Monroe, LA as his closest relative. Thanks again for posting Alta Lee's and Bryan's children's names. I NEVER would have found them on my own. I put your Coats info on my tree on ancestry.com. I'll happily send you an official invite to my tree if you'd like. I hope to hear from you...Ellen Marcus (originally from Texas, but now in New York City) ------------------------------ -- A shameless plug for my web activities: Support Authentic Cherokee Art - look for the Cherokee Authentication tag - that insures they are a tribal citizen Indian Arts and Craft Act: http://nativeamericanlawus.blogspot.com Freedmen vs Cherokee Nation: http://freedmenvscherokeenation.blogspot.com/ Cherokee Basket Weaver's Association: http://cherokeebasketweaversassociation.org/ Cherokee Basket Weaving Books: http://www.lulu.com/groups/indianbasketweaving Cherokee Artists Association http://www.cherokeeartistsassociation.org Coats Archive: http://www.coatsarchive.us Pages Through Time http://www.pagesthroughtime.us

    3. John, Frances is from Rev Will's line, Lemuel was his son, so her test result would be the same as my cousins; she is a descendant of Lemuel's brother Wilson Coats, he's the one that moved to the San Francisco area...this is Curt's ancestor as well....I'm not sure we'll ever really clear those Johns up out of SC because the documentation just isn't there yet...so Curt, Frances and I have as common ancestor Rev William Coats back to the William Coat wife Frances who had land in Newberry County SC and died in Kershaw County SC....I suspect all those males connected with that Kershaw group were brothers, but we likewise need more info and documentation on the William Coats wife Mary in MD and William Coats wife Frances in SC to actually say they are one and the same person...or if it was Mary Frances or something similar....both Curt and Frances have documentation to Rev Will .....Char On Sat, Aug 1, 2009 at 9:15 AM, John Coats <jwcoats@htc.net> wrote: > edmonstar@aol.com wrote: > > hi? my mother was vivian coats, dau of james longstreet coats, of felix > coats, of wilson coats, of rev. william coats, etc., Charlotte's line.? i > have some old notes from my father's original research of the newberry, > south carolina coates, coate, coats.? the funny thing about that area was > that there were about 5 john coates, or coats, sometimes the spelling was > different on different documents, there was gentleman john, little john, big > john, etc.? which they themselves used to distinguish themselves from each > other.? anyway, when i get some of this other mess sorted out, i will send > it to Charlotte.? my father did original research in the old archives and > found, and hand copied (since there were not copiers) the wills and land > purchases.? it is very confusing since i'm not very familiar with any > coates/coats stuff prior to the father of rev. william coats.? anyway, i'll > keep everyone posted, frances edmonston > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Linda Coate <lcoate@ancestrees.com> > > To: coates@rootsweb.com > > Sent: Thu, Jul 30, 2009 6:44 am > > Subject: Re: [COATES] Fwd: Lemuel Coats > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Cool. 2. Linda Coate
    3. One of our DNA members has had a cousin do a fantastic amount of research proving their descent from Thomas Coats, son of Joan Sisom in early Philadelphia. You can view a detailed summary of a lineage from this line at http://www.ancestrees.com/dna/family.html. It's kit #66231. If you know anyone who wonder's if they descend from one of Joan Sisom's Coats sons, the information is now is place for you to prove that by joining our DNA group. Great work!!! Linda Coate, admin.

    1. [COATES] Update
    2. Linda Coate
    3. We have an updated version of the Coates DNA page up with all our latest results at http://www.ancestrees.com/dna/family.html. Their are quite a few improvements in the Marmaduke group, plus we have 2 more kits that have been ordered. If anyone in the group has verified an older ancestor than is listed, I can get that corrected fro you. Please let me know. If we keep up on that including sources for your new proof, it will significantly help us find our common ancestors in our cousin groups. Linda Coate
