    1. [COATES-L] Library report

    3. Well, finally finished the last two rolls of Rowan County NC deeds...nothing...not one Coats on them...I did find a bunch of stuff on a William Cole...I think other than or might be the William Temple Cole there...his land was located on Lick Creek...there is a Job Cole there but didn't find his state grant...but the dates are much too late I think...1789 if I recall, I got the records and will scan them and put them in the Archive.... Also got the South Carolina Equity records in...the case of Catharine Coats and John Coats, sen is among this group...haven't made copies of it yet...but it doesn't tell us any more than what we already know...although I have not read the entire complaint yet...but there is no answer to it and it is a small file...not sure if it names any of his kids...but does show Samuel Coats as Catharine's next friend for the suit... Also found an interesting mortage among these documents...this was in an estate and I've forgotten which one...not a name I recall seeing...but it is a mortgage from a William Baker to a Goodman and the witnesses for it are none other than Henry Coates and Amelia Coates...if I recall correctly Amelia was Henry's daughter by wife Priscilla Long Turner...at any rate this is the first connection in SC between the name Baker and Coats....I'm wondering if this could be Amelia and a half brother Henry??? Didn't her father have children by his second wife Betsy? I've ordered the next two microfilm for the SC equity records for Newberry and I've skipped a few in the NC deed records to see if I can locate Thomas Coats and Wiley Coats land records in those records...so I've ordered the two where I think Thomas' land record might be... Lee your right. We must remember that Coat-Of-Arms were created by the exploits, heritage and locality of the family and usually created by the country or royalty of the family and country..usually England or Scotland. I am not sure about other countries, but these were not handed out lightly. Make sure they are valid representation before buying. My niece just sent me one of the bogus crests for our family and was quite proud that her aunt had sent this to her many years ago. Sorry Niece..It's a made up crest! Louise

    1. Re: [COATES-L] Check out New Family Search Engines
    2. Here's what Eastman says about these sites: (Hope this helps!) - More on My Least Favorite Genealogy Sites Last week I wrote about a particular Web site that sells mass- produced coats of arms and short descriptions of "the history of your family name." While I singled out one particular company, I also mentioned another company, now-defunct, called Halberts. In the days following the appearance of that article, I received many e-mails from newsletter readers telling me about still other sites that peddle similar "products." The e-mails I received mentioned a bunch of sites that peddle this junk. I had previously heard of some of these sites but not others. I was surprised at the number of sites that were new to me. Several people who wrote e-mails this week suggested that I compile a list of these sites and write about them in a future newsletter. I am declining that suggestion simply because two different organizations are already doing an excellent job of documenting these charlatans. Both organizations are providing excellent consumer protection information to genealogists and to others. If you have questions, comments or information about a possible rip-off involving family name histories, bogus coats of arms or any related topics, I would suggest you contact one of the following: The (U.S.) National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection Committee was originally constituted as the Ethics Committee in 1993. This committee provides a watchdog service for such "services" as family history books, surname products (plaques, articles of clothing, certificates, etc.), surname newsletters, and family archives. The Consumer Protection Committee does not maintain an online listing of the companies they are watching but will be glad to answer questions. Before you purchase a so-called "history of your family name" or other such products, you should first contact the National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection Committee at 4527 17th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207-2399. For more information, look at their article "PSST! Wanna Buy Your Name?" at: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/about/content/committees/PSST.html Another excellent resource that focuses on misleading Web pages is the Genealogical Web Site Watchdog. This site lists numerous Web sites that have misleading information. Most of the sites listed are commercial entities trying to sell you something. Each site is listed along with detailed information on their "products." This Genealogical Web Site Watchdog is a product of "The Watchdog Committee" composed of the following members: Mary McCampbell Bell, CALS, CGL; Donn Devine, CG, CGI, JD; Bob Frelinger; Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, CGRS; Marie Varrelman Melchiori, CGRS, CGL; and Joy Reisinger, CG. All committee members belong to the Association of Professional Genealogists. The Genealogical Web Site Watchdog is available online at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm I strongly recommend that you check with one or both of the above organizations before spending money on any of these histories of your family name "services" or any company that sells so-called family coats of arms.

There is a microfilm available which contains the minutes of this Church from 1832 to 1840, a six year gap, and then 1846 to 1888. Sunday school records are also in this film from 1868 to 1899. This film is available on an inter library loan basis from: Baptist Historical Collection Furman University Library 3300 Poinsett Hwy. Greenville, SC 29613-0600 Get ready for some very hard reading! If you borrow this film they will allow you some two weeks with it and believe me, you will need it. The writing is not very good in places and the data appears to be scattered about as if the book were apart when it was copied. You just have to be real careful that you don't make erroneous date assumptions. I learned more from that film about some aspects of my family than I have from anywhere else so far. Now, I need some help from some of you in regards to this same Church. Last summer I visited this Church's cemetery and found the markers of my ancestors in a terrible disarray. Upon speaking to the pastor, I learned that about 1960 someone who "had one too many" drove through this cemetery and knocked many of the markers over and dragged them about. I would very much like to restore these to their original locations THIS SUMMER. I am about 60% sure that I know where they go, BUT I would like to see a picture maybe someone took of this cemetery to help me be sure. I do NOT need to be able to read the names, just see the arrangement of the markers, as they are different sizes. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. 3. Well, still looking at those Rowan County NC deeds...but still no Coats in there....the SC Equity records haven't come in yet... Also got the Hopewell MM, records from Fredericks County VA... And found another book of KY land records...it shows that a George and Samuel Coats got military warrants for service in VA but the land was in KY...now Samuel I believe was a Seaman in the Navy and George was in a State line or something... Anyway, George's is dated 1783 and Samuel's is dated 1784...so during that periord of time KY was still part of VA...doesn't say where the land is located though... 3. Also the last payroll and muster record for this William seems to indicate that he was a Sgt...so I'm not sure if all the Wms are just grouped together here or if Wm Coats started out as a private and then got the rank of Sgt... Also you'll notice that the first record is a card that lists a whole bunch of record numbers...I'm not sure what this is either and it could possibly be the original record reference...these cards appear to be information taken from another source...but the other source is not among these records... I'm adding Wm Coats of VA payroll and muster records here... http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/docsvirginia.html Not all of the links are there yet and there are still more records for him that have not been linked or uploaded yet... Again these are large files i.e. about 2MB each...
