...Several prominent genealogists have research theories on how to solve identity problems concerning female ancestors. ....used a three-step process in her article "Mary Hale, Wife of Deacon Edward Putnam, Accuser in the Salem Witchcraft Trials". 1. Identify all reasonable possibilities. 2. Eliminate all but one of the possibilities. 3. Identify and strengthen links to support the remaining possibility. ....in a lecture titled "Finding Females: Wives, Daughters, Mothers, Sisters, and Paramours" says you should reconstruct the lives of all the males associated with the woman: her husband, father, son and brother. By analyzing the data on these men and their relatives, classmates, business partners, military buddies, community associates and neighbors, you will also find information about the women. .....suggests in her lecture "Finding females on the Frontier: Records and Strategies Using Nineteenth-Century Midwest Examples" that researchers first identify the specific problem (origin, identity, disappearance), then fix the woman in time and place with a known fact closest to the problem. For example, if a known fact is the birth of a child or a marriage, begin your search at that time and locality. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Solving Identity problems: Many genalogist have found ways of solving identity problems about women and have published their results. Reading published case studies on researching females found in the respected genealogical journals, such as the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, The American Genealogist (TAG), The Genalogist and the New England Historical and Genealogical REgister, will give you ideas and involve you in the research process that helped solve some convoluted cases. Of these articles, many deal with colonial and early national women, especially those cases found in TAG and the Register. Some case studies are listed here in the Bibliography, but there are many more available. I encourage you to read and study many of these articles as you begin tracing women ancestors. Even though an article may not pertain specifically to your ancestry, the methods and sources the author used may help you solve a difficult research problem... ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
This is pretty basic book but thought some of Chapter four might be of interest...there is another book on Evidence which I'll check out as well... Discovering your Female Ancestors by Sharon Carmack: Chapter four: Probably the most common problem in researching women is that of identiy. What was her maiden name? .... In some circumstnaces, a woman chose to keep her maiden name instead of using her husband's name....A respected Virginia genealogist noted that in some Virginia marriage and parish records, "ladies' names (were) entered in an almost unexplainable manner. I understand that in certain Quaker recordings the maiden names of brides have been used when they were widows."....another genealogist added "The practice here discussed is very common in Dutch records, maiden names and espcially patronymics being used after many years of widowhood" As mentioned in chapter two under Passenger Arrival lists, Catholic French and Italian women in particular were known by their maiden names on all legal documents in their native lands. While this custom may not have been practiced once they came ot America, all records generated in the Old Country - such as passenger lists and emigration papers - will record the woman by her maiden name.... ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Hi, all. I have an interesting letter written by a Mrs. Juanita Hackney age 83 - in 1969 replying to an inquiry of my mother's. I am going to copy the last several paragraphs (the first ones aren't applicable, just friendly. Maybe someone can use this info: "I have such interesting history of the Coats family. "My great-great grandfather was John Coats from Virginia. His son, my great grandfather, was William born in Virginia 1795. They moved to Rowan Co. North Carolina between 1795 and `1800 where another son was born, Sanders Coats. This is the only c hildren of John Coats we have found so far. "William married Malinda Amelia Barrett in North Carolina in 1819. We have an interesting record of the Barrett family. Jonathan Barrett was born in Prince George Co., Maryland 1751. He was granted a large piece of land in that county. Had a large plantation, 12 children and 22 salves. His daughter Malinda married my great grandfather William Coats. They had Wilson Coats, James, John, Elizabeth, Rebecca and William Jr., my grandfather. "He was the father of my father John Coats. He had a sister Cora. My Aunt. "My great great grandfather John Coats from England or Virginia. The Coats moved from North Carolina to Indiana, then to Illinois where my father was born. They had relattives in NewBerry South Carolina. Sanders Coats was in Memphis Tenn during the Civil War. He was in Ark. in 1850. The family of Coats is all over the south. "Does any of this family record correspond with your records. This is all the information I have at the present. "We are trying to find more. Jonathan Barrett fought in the American Revolution. He and family moved from Maryland to North Carolina. After his 12 children were born, he moved to N. Car. Rowen County. "I met your father at the Santa Fe depot. He looked so much like my father they could have been brothers" That's all the letter. Hope this helps someone. I've checked a book out of the library regarding researching your Female ancestors...it's pretty basic...but we're on the right path with some of these...I'll send some more info through on it as I read it...but one thing it suggests in research is journals or letters ... I've not run across this in the Coats' family ...anyone else know of any journals they might have kept...?
