I've ordered the following rolls of microfilm: 4 rolls from TN - 2 from Bedford County, 1 from Lincoln County, 1 from Robertson County - all land records (deed books) 1 roll from MD = Baltimore County early court records (land) 1600s 4 rolls from MO - 1 roll from Callaway County, a probate case index, not sure what these are - 1 roll from Jackson County and 1 roll from Howard County - all land records 3 rolls from KY - all three from Madison County KY early tax lists, and 2 rolls of land records I have a request in for microfilm indices to KY State Archives also for Fayette County, Lincoln County and earliest records available i.e. Fincastle County - also a request in for indicies from NC State Archive for Rowan County and Guilford Counties Also ordering 2 rolls of film from PA State Archive - both are indexes to land records pre and post revolution period...I spoke with them and they said this will give me an overview of what they have... NJ State Archive does not have any microfilm other than census records available for interlibrary loan or purchase...all their records they tell me are on microfilm through LDS... I have not received the info from GA on their colonial records yet or from the SC Archive on those Council Minutes... Hello, I was just researching my Thomas line. I have found that Simeon Thomas b. July29,1803 that married Esther Coates in Henry Co,S.C. is a cousin to Martha Adeline Thomas b.1829 married Charles Austin Coates and after his death she married Charles brother William Elijah (Doc)Coates. Charles and William Coates are both Austin Marion Coates and Margaret Coons Sons. Martha Thomas' father is named Simeon Thomas too.He was born 1800 in Hickman, Tn. He is the great uncle of Simeon Thomas that married Esther Coates. Robbie

Not too long ago there was a discussion about the name Coot/Coots. What was the consensus? Is it a variant spelling of Coats, or is it a separate and unrelated name? While trying to find a connection between the names Coats, Holman, and Burnett, I came across the 1807 will of Isaac Holman of Rowan Co., NC. One of the witnesses was John Coot. Any opinions? Mary C. Well, this is just my opinion...but I think to connect Coots and Coats there needs to be some analysis of the records to see if perhaps the names were used in the alternative in the same documents or documents dealing with the same person... In SC there are records that show Cote or Cotes was used as well as Coate, Coates and Coats...and we know they are the same person...so I think from that stand point you could say that Cote/Coate etc are derivitives...however, there is also a separate Cote/Cotes surname...so you really have to be careful with these...it might be that the clerk just mixed up the pronounciation...remember those southern accents...I've got cousins you'd think were from a foreign country...<g>... I think in the Archive there is a Coots land record but the signature says Coats....so just not sure at this point...plus I think there is a Coots family...so one has to be really careful when making those leaps of faith across spellings... On the land record in TN for Coots I would have picked it up as Coats and figured the clerk mispelled the name as Coots at the top...or that he spelled it Coots and then discovered the correct spelling when he got to the signature...I don't recall how the body of the deed looked.... But I think it would take some more info before you could say this was a mix up and they could have just mixed up one person not necessarily the whole family etc... But if you look at enough documents you'll see either a pattern or you'll find where the mixed up came from etc... Well, I've decided to try my hand at some record distribution... I always hate to order microfilm if I don't know what's on it...and have gotten burned a few times...so I've decided if I order the microfilm and can help others looking...guess I'd give it a try... Costs will be nominal...sorta like Strictly by Name except I'm not going to do transcriptions...takes to long and I hate reading that old writting...<g>...I'll put index of names up also...so you can see what's there...boy, is that nice...
